5 Things You Need To Know About Bernie Sanders’ New Medicare-For-All Bill

Since the demise of Paul Ryan’s American Health Care Act, Democrats on Capitol Hill have been gloating about the preservation of Obamacare. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has done them one better, telling Hardwick town hall attendees he will soon introduce a single-payer health care bill in Congress.

Here are five things you should know about Sanders’ plan.

1. Sanders introduced similar legislation in 2009 and 2011.

Sanders’ American Health Security Act of 2009 (S.703) would have provided every U.S. citizen and/or green-card holder with health services. The bill was referred to the Committee on Finance eight years ago this month. Sanders tried again two years later, introducing a Medicare-for-all type single-payer system which was accompanied by Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA)’s companion bill with 11 co-sponsors.

“The twin measures, both called the American Health Security Act of 2011, would provide federal guidelines and strong minimum standards for states to administer single-payer health care programs,” read the press release.

2. Sanders’ single payer efforts previously failed in his home state.

In 2014, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin nixed the health plan, fearing it would “hurt” the economy. California would soon launch a single-payer health care system, making it the first state to do so.

3. Like Obamacare, the popularity of Sanders’ plan rests largely on its name.

A February 2016 poll revealed that while 36 percent of Americans favored a Medicare-for-all system, support dropped to just 15% when it was referred to as “single payer.”

4. With a Republican majority, Medicare-for-all is doomed.

Along with Sanders and Rep. McDermott, Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) introduced a Medicare-for-all bill with one national health insurance plan. Seventy-two Democrats and not a single Republican cosponsored the bill.

5. Medicare-for-all may be only way for Trump to fulfill his heath care promises.

Donald Trump promised “insurance for everybody.” He also vowed not to cut Medicare or Medicaid.  Physicians for a National Health Program says single payer reform is “the only way to fulfill the president’s pledge.’

Bernie also desperately needs a third vacation home after the DNC screwed him out of the Primary. 🙂

I think you misunderstand Bernie Sanders. Healthcare for all has always been his bag. We should not be like Republicans and attack someone because they think differently than we do. T-party republicans and other republican attack each other. In my state, Idaho, we have two republican parties, each with their own chairperson.

      1. He’s always had bumper sticker slogans – so what? He never achieves anything, and he actively sabotages the Democrats when they do.

Do you really want individual states running Medicare as Bernie naively proposes. They have repeatedly shown that when Republicans are in power in a state they will do all they can to limit health care coverage and promote privatization.

First of all, check the original documentation on the ACA reform. Single Payer was the original plan of President Obama. Why are all these second rate actors grabbing credit where it is NOT due?

The idea of single Payer was to gradually move Americans into single player via a Medicare style plan.

Until we clean house in the Republican Party, they will continue to inflict a failed Big Insurance monopoly on all of us.

That is absolutely true. The American people are going to suffer more injustices until they clean that scum out of Washington DC.

  3. D. Stark March 29, 2017

That’s right – Sen. Durenberger, (R) of MN said the day ACA was passed that it most resembled the Republican response to Hillary’s position back in the mid-90’s (they were actually sitting and trying to work together and compromise – imagine that!). There were concessions to the Republicans with the ACA in including insurance companies and some market-based principles. After rollout, the right/Tea Party dug in, failing to do things in many states to help toward making it work and demonizing it through some-60 ridiculous votes – as a tactic to stymie Obama and score political points. They showed little concern for actually helping the broad spectrum of the American people get access to affordable health insurance!

Bernie Sanders is a good man. He has compassion for those less fortunate than he is. However, this is the most selfish country in the world and will not go for something if their taxpayer dollars go for saving others’ lives. They don’t blink when their taxpayer dollars go for oil subsidies, tax breaks for the wealthy, and lavish weekends for the tumpster and family. We will have to get the best we can get. At the time, it was the ACA. If we ever restore our democracy, we might get a single payer.

THIS is the ‘Healthcare For All Americans’ that #45 was talking about.
Even though he DOESN’T know it; since it covers ALL his PROMISES at his Rallies…..
