6 Times Donald Trump Has Sold Out American Workers

Donald Trump likes to pretend that he would be the savior of American workers. He has made his opposition to trade deals like NAFTA a central part of his campaign and promised to “bring the jobs back” to America.

But the truth is that few have benefitted more from foreign labor and worker intimidation than Trump himself. A close look at his business past reveals that if a Trump presidency is anything like Trump’s businesses, he’ll sell out American workers and labor laws for the sake of the bottom line.

1. He hires guest workers over Americans.

Back in February, the New York Times reported that out of nearly 300 U.S. residents that have applied for a job at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, only 17 were hired.

Instead, the resort hired hundreds of foreign guest workers from countries like Romania. According to the Department of Labor, Trump’s club has pursued more than 500 work visas for these workers.

When reached by the Times, Trump said that the only reason Americans “wouldn’t get a callback is that they weren’t qualified, for some reason.”

In reality, of course, this is a move to maximize profit. The Department of Labor sets a “prevailing wage” for foreign employees based on the position and location. These workers are restricted to working only for the company that sponsors their legal stay, and can’t leave for better or higher-paying positions without obtaining a new visa.

Trump has also done this at his Virginia vineyard and at his golf resorts in Florida and New Jersey. A Reuters report of Department of Labor data conducted last August found that Trump companies have attempted to import at least 1,100 workers on temporary visas since 2000.

2. Trump products are manufactured outside the U.S.

The Donald J. Trump Collection shirts, eyeglasses, suits, and perfumes are made in Bangladesh, China and other countries that pay low wages.

“Finding the biggest company with the best practices is what was important to him,” Jeff Danzer, who was vice president of a company hired by Trump to broker one of these manufacturing deals, told the Washington Post. “Finding a company that made in America was never something that was specified.”

3. He used his mob connections to minimize costs.

Trump worked with some of New York’s most notorious mobsters in several of his business ventures in order to bypass labor laws and regulations. A Politico investigation looked into Trump’s connections to the mob:

The picture shows that Trump’s career has benefited from a decades-long and largely successful effort to limit and deflect law enforcement investigations into his dealings with top mobsters, organized crime associates, labor fixers, corrupt union leaders, con artists and even a one-time drug trafficker whom Trump retained as the head of his personal helicopter service.

Trump chose to use ready-mix concrete, the more expensive and riskier option than pre-cast concrete or steel girder construction, to build Trump Tower and other projects. Why? Because mobsters Anthony “Fat Tony” Salerno and Paul Castellano controlled the ready-mix business in the city, along with the mob-connected Teamsters union involved in delivering and pouring it.

4. He forced undocumented Polish immigrants to work in abusive conditions to build Trump Tower.

According to a lawsuit filed in a Manhattan federal court by House Wreckers Local 95, Trump brought in approximately 200 undocumented Polish workers to demolish the building that occupied the space that would become Trump Tower, in order to avoid regulated working conditions, and to avoid paying unionized American workers pensions and welfare benefits.

Trump claimed he did not know the employees were undocumented immigrants, but the court found this to be a lie. In its 1991 opinion against Trump, the court stated that “Testimony established that Donald Trump visited the 57th Street site and observed Kaszycki’s Polish workers, noting that they were ‘good hard workers.”

The court also found that it would have been unlikely for Trump to not notice the Polish workers, who, unlike union workers, did not wear hard hats.

In addition, Trump surely noticed the “several very visible work stoppages” that the workers staged as a protest “because they were not being paid their wages.”

Yeah. Trump was not satisfied with not paying benefits – he also didn’t pay wages.

5. He tends to not pay people for their services.

A USA Today investigation revealed that at least 60 lawsuits against Trump over the past 30 years involved Americans who did a job for the businessman and were never paid for it. Dozens of tradesmen have alleged that Trump failed to pay them for their labor. Forty-eight waiters and dozens of bartenders and other hourly-workers at different Trump business all across the country have made the same claim. Even some lawyers who defended Trump in court allegedly went unpaid.

Apart from the lawsuits, hundreds of liens have been filed by Trump contractors and employees since the 1980’s, ranging from a $75,000 claim by a New York air conditioning and heating company to a $1 million from a NYC real estate banking firm.

6. Employees of his companies have had to fight to unionize.

Last year, employees of Trump’s Las Vegas hotel took to the streets to ask for better wages and to be allowed to join the Culinary Union. Trump told the press that some of his employees “loved” him so much that they has chosen not to unionize. But protesters denied this claim, and they eventually voted to unionize. In March, Trump’s Las Vegas employees one again took to the streets, claiming that their vote had not been honored and demanding that a contract be negotiated. Employees have claimed that they have faced intimidation by the company’s management as a result of their protests.

So, hiring foreign workers(and often abusing them with shady practices), having his cheap brands manufactured overseas(not here mind you because that would cost him a few extra bucks), and them having said goods shipped back here for American consumers to purchase at perhaps inflated prices, is how the Donald intends to Make America Great Again!

Gee, I can see the skies light up with Red, White, and Blue at the prospect !!

Aren’t we lucky to have the Drumpf Immigrants here in America.

    1. Independent1 July 19, 2016

It’s hard to imagine that there is really anyone in America more sleazy (dishonest and immoral) than Donald Trump. And it’s even harder to actually realize that this sleaze-bag is actually running for president.

      1. JPHALL July 19, 2016

It is even harder to understand why so many so called freedom loving Americans are following this charlatan.

        1. Independent1 July 19, 2016

Yeah! How can so many millions of Americans be so blind as to not see the con job that Trump is putting on them!!!

          1. Mama Bear July 20, 2016

because way more people than we would like to believe are sheep and will listen to the one who says what they want to hear. No critical thinking skills, what I call self-imposed ignorance. Predators like Trump smell them a mile away.

          2. ralphkr July 20, 2016

Critical thinking? Oooh, Mama Bear, now you are poking the bear. Don’t you you remember when the Republican party (Texas) called for a ban on teaching critical thinking in schools because it “challenges student’s fixed beliefs and parental authority”. In other words, critical thinking is wrong because critical thinkers tend to become Democrats.

          3. Mama Bear July 21, 2016

Critical thinkers tend to become intelligent and not let charlatans pull the wool over their eyes 🙂 And I do recall the incident you are talking about. Texas seems to be the breeding grounds for ignorance.

They are also the state where most of our text books are produced.

          5. Independent1 July 21, 2016

Which would appear to be a big mistake.

          6. Joe Gawel July 20, 2016

Because he’s out front and center shouting all that crap about Clinton that his uninformed (ill informed??) can’t hear enough of.

          7. plc97477 July 21, 2016

I blame a lot of it on the fact that the gotp have cut spending for education almost to the bone.

  2. Theodora30 July 19, 2016

The media should have been pointing this out from the first time Trump started basing immigrants for taking jobs from Ameicans and for trade deals allowing cheap products from other countries to compete with those made in the US. Instead they let him get away with this blatant hypocrisy knowing full well that Trump has profited from these very same practices. If they gave half that tension to this that they gave to Hillary’s emails Trump would not be the nominee. Fear of “ferriners” is what drives a lot of his supporters.

        Jessica Chandler is a scam.

    2. FireBaron July 20, 2016

They did. Nobody paid attention until he started his “Make America Great Again” B.S. campaign. That’s when people discovered the stone thrower lived in a glass house.

      1. idamag July 20, 2016

I read the English version of “Mein Kampf,” I read, “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.” Hitler was saying he would make Germany great again. How did that work out?

    3. dpaano July 20, 2016

I believe SOME of the media, the ones not owned by the rightwing, have TRIED to put this out, but the Trump group has managed to explain it all away with their lies and blaming others for these actions. All Trump has done is lie and blame everyone else for his foibles, and the silly part is that people…..even so-called intelligent people….believe him! He has done NOTHING but lie the entire campaign, and even when he’s called out about it, they STILL believe him. I don’t know what’s going on in some people’s minds that they have turned against their fellow Americans and chosen to believe this individual! His campaign has been nothing but how wonderful Trump is and all the wonderful things he’s going to do for the American workers, when, in retrospect, he’s done nothing so far and has not put forth ANY ideas of how he’s going to do anything if he’s elected. He seems to think that he can just go into the White House and do away with everything. Apparently, no one has told him that he’s not running for God or King, and that he has to answer to Congress if he intends to get anything done. The most we can hope is that most of our congressmen and women will see through his BS and not let him get away with anything that will bring this country down!!!

      1. Theodora30 July 20, 2016

Actually I heard a discussion on Morning Joe in which they admitted the mainstream media waited too long to cover these issues, so even they admit they were part of the problem. Their excuses (mostly from the odious Mark Halperin) were that there were too many candidates and that the media did not bother because the other candidates did not raise these issues – as if they do not owe it to the public to give us the information we need to make an informed choice even if other candidates do not bring up pertinent info. That is why our Founding Fathers gave the press specific constitutional protection. They knew an informed citizenry is essential to a healthy democracy.

  3. Lynda Groom July 19, 2016

It does not matter what he has actually done in real life, for he is talking too the ill informed rubes who are willing to believe whatever nonsense comes from his mouth. Remember the old saying do what I say, not what I do. It works every time, at least with his crowd.

    1. Jinmichigan July 20, 2016

It does matter to the independents who will decide this election. This article and hundreds more just like it need to be plastered on every media we can find.

  4. dpaano July 20, 2016

But, despite everything noted in this article, the American public still want to vote for him…..it’s amazing and a little disconcerting to say the least! He is NOT the person who is going to work hard for the American worker…..he didn’t before he decided to run and he’s not going to do it if he gets into the White House! All Trump cares about is Trump and what he can do to make himself believe he’s the best thing EVER! Why people can’t see this is beyond me…..all I can say, which is what I’ve been saying all along, is that people have been totally brainwashed!

    1. Paul Bass July 20, 2016

Didn’t A. Stevenson reply something like ‘I need MORE than just the thinking people votes to win the election’ ?

  5. idamag July 20, 2016

The current problem is, people like Trump and the Koch brothers have devalued the American worker until the worker himself believes it. I went to a cathedral, in Germany, that was built in the year 1032. It was beautiful. It was not built by people like Trump and the Koch brothers. It was built by craftsmen and laborers. Back then craftsmen were highly regarded. Back then, Germany did not send to Mexico for laborers. The American worker is supposed to compete with the guy in India who makes $3.00 a day. Manufacturing has gone overseas to cheap labor and slave labor. Eight year old kids are apprenticed to work for nothing. Prisoners, in China, are forced to work for nothing in American factories. And we accept that to buy cheap stuff. Religious people, in this country, are not worried about the treatment of American workers or the lack of jobs. They are crotch sniffers who only worry about the region halfway between the top of one’s head to the tip of one’s toes.

  6. The Westchester News July 20, 2016

Trump built those towers and nobody complained when they all had jobs. He is the master of the New York City Skylines.

Donald Trump is outspoken, yes we all know, and he doesn’t apologize for being strongly opinionated. That’s why we love him. We think that’s a good thing.

Trump is a strong leader. He will make America great again. Donald J. Trump will make America “Strong” again.

If you don’t like him for his business tactics, too bad because he can’t be beat, he built the TRUMP EMPIRE. TRUMP is a brand, please don’t take it personal because it’s not personal, it’s business.

Hillary Clinton is the one you have to watch out for because the Islamic State owns her, they bought her with $2 Billion dollars. That’s what Islam gave her, and now she has to deliver “Sharia Law” to America – ISIS is her Army. She let’s American soldiers die without remorse. She lies and lies and lies. Hillary Clinton is corrupt and criminal, she belongs behind bars with the rest of the felons.

Americans are voting for Donald J. Trump! Nothing you say today or tomorrow is going to change that we stand with TRUMP – “Make America Great Again” TRUMP on Nov. 8, 2016 he will be the next President of The United States of America!
