Citizens United Hits New Low, Scams Elderly

Citizens United—the unintentionally ironic name of the conservative non-profit organization best known for the Supreme Court case that decimated the historical definition of personhood—is basically the worst organization ever to take up arms in the righteous battle against our democracy. But according to a new report, the group is even worse than previously realized.

In an article published Tuesday, the Daily Beast revealed Citizens United is scamming the elderly by soliciting fundraising from senior citizens with dementia and Alzheimer’s. According to the report, Jennifer Bell discovered the company’s scheme when a relative of hers was hospitalized. When Bell had her family member’s mail forwarded to herself, she began receiving upwards of five letters per week from Citizens United.

“I am writing this letter to ask for your forgiveness and understanding with a recent mix-up with the Post Office,” president David Bosse (who’s currently working as a deputy campaign manager for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign) wrote in the letter. “As a result, we were unable to receive your $50 donation.”

“If you can see it in your heart to re-send your $50 in the included postage-provided envelope it would be a blessing to us,” the letter reads.

But according to Bell, her family member never sent a check to the organization. And, as Bell points out, how would they have known her relative sent a donation in the first place, if a post office “mix-up” prevented Citizens United from receiving the check.

“The fact that they’re sending this fraudulent piece of mail that says, ‘Oh, we didn’t get your $50’—that means they know the person has forgotten they didn’t send a check,” Bell said. “If you send them multiple pieces in a day, they’ll write a check for every piece because of dementia or Alzheimer’s.”

Citizens United, Bosse and the Trump campaign declined to comment on the article, but if Bell’s allegations are true, it’s just another notch in the belt of Citizens United’s unethical (and frankly, anti-American) tactics. With any luck, we’ll find a way to beat these creeps for good.

If it has anything to do with Trump, you can rest assured it is fraudulent.

Trump took a billion dollar write down and had a loss-carryover. So abiding by the tax code is considered fraud to you?

Samsung this week is writing down $2.3 billion in losses stemming from exploding Note 7 smartphones. Is that fraud to you?

Its said daily in NM and elsewhere, what kind of a genius loses a billion dollars in a year? All the carmakers who have had recalls and lost billions, you never accused them of fraud, or Samsung this week, so why say it about Trump under the same circumstances? Its only fraud if Trump does it but not Ford or Toyota?

This article is nothing. What about the thousands of hillary donors who were re-charged and re-charged on their credit cards with no relief help for their complaints to banks and Hillary?

This is another misleading charge by the right wing. An investigation of this issue found one woman in Minnesota was charged $25 twice in March 2016 and $19 later in the month. Whether this was a mistake or done on purpose has never been proven. Your claim of thousands being charged is unproven and unfounded.

This seems to me to be about as low as it gets. Hopefully I will not have to further revise that definition of low.

I think John Oliver already has. That great big sky above is is rock bottom. A week later that great big sky is where we were a week earlier before Trumps latest allegations came to light. We’re sinking into the abyss with no bottom ????

      Mama,

Regrettably this is just another in a long list of organizations targeting the elderly. There are also any number of phone scams occurring now too. Once they get your mailing address…

So please keep an eye on Grandma Bear, to keep her from these scams.

Justice Antonin Scalia would be so proud if he hadn’t been murdered as the wingnuts claim. His little boy is growing into quite a man. That Trump has another conman helping run his disaster of a campaign should be expected by now. Chris Christie needs a cellmate and it looks like he may have found one.
