#EndorseThis: Are Corker And Flake Heroes? Seth Meyers Thinks Not

Lionized for denouncing the authoritarian, plainly deranged president, Senators Bob Corker and Jeff Flake are a pair of unlikely heroes. After all, as Seth Meyers recalls, they were all too happy to support Donald Trump for president last year — long after the casino developer’s personality and political defects were obvious.

Now Corker complains that Trump hasn’t grown into the presidency as expected. Except why would anyone be surprised that at 71, Trump hasn’t completely changed his personality over a period of nine months?

Instead of simply walking away, asks Meyers, why aren’t Corker, Flake, and others who complain about Trump doing anything to oppose him? “Trump won’t change his behavior just because you hurl insults at him,” says Seth. “Believe me, I’ve tried!”

These politicians righteously accuse Trump of failing to do his job. But they’re failing to do theirs.

As long as they vote with Trump, their talk is just a distraction.

Why do I get visions of the smack talked in “Pro” wrestling? Is this scripted as well?

Omg ???? the Barbarians are at the gate. We currently have the most unqualified unhinged president to ever occupy the Oval Office no thanks to Putin. Now we have someone even nuttier in Roy Moore the GOP Senate nominee for Alabama. His Democratic challenger Doug Jones who’s eminently more qualified is a former prosecutor and currently tied at 42 percent in the latest polls. If Judge Moore twice removed from the bench wins in December we’ll essentially have been turned into a fascist state with our First Amendment Rights severely limited. Today the free press is under attack tomorrow everyone’s rights to freely assemble to protest will be taken away

We can kiss our democracy good bye!

Sadly very true. I’m bracing for the worst but I pray Roy Moore can be defeated in December. If Doug Jones wins that’ll be a major setback for Bannon

I have known Roy Moore personally for over 30 years, and I can say that you are correct that Donald Trump is far less intelligent than Roy Moore. But I’m not sure which one is nuttier as far as wanting to change or destroy the Constitution. Basically, Trump wants the Constitution to be ignored whenever it gets in the way of him making more money and getting rave reviews in the media; otherwise, he doesn’t care one way or the other about what the Constitution says, and doesn’t even know. Roy Moore, on the other hand, wants us to interpret the Constitution to allow him to decide what is Constitutional and lawful, based on his personal interpretation of what he thinks the Bible says. As long as he gets to decide how we can live our lives, based on his warped interpretation of the Bible, he is willing to preserve our Constitution, at least the interpretation of it that he approves.

I tend to somewhat agree; however, not sure what they could accomplish. If they stayed and ran another campaign, it would NOT be pretty with Bannon fighting them all the way. Yes, they, unlike the others in our Congress, realized (after the fact) that this man was NOT the president that they thought he would be and have decided not to run again rather than to eschew his agenda. I’m not sure what I would do in their place; it’s a no-win situation. The most they can do now is to continue to speak their minds and hopefully get others in the Congress to get some balls and do the same (especially those who are not up for re-election until 2020)!

You’re saying that Flake, Corker, & McCain didn’t know what they were buying when they bought into Trump? Hard to imaging they didn’t know exactly what they were getting. They’re smart guys. And they’re still voting that way.

Unless and until they stop voting the Republican agenda, I really can’t see the ongoing insults as anything beyond some bizarre kabuki theatre. In my darker moments, I believe it scripted to deflect news coverage from their actions.

I have to give Flake at least some credit: I understand he did not support Trump for president even after Trump received the nomination, and he stated that he did not vote for Trump for president. But he could have been much more open and forceful in letting people know he did not support Trump. Instead, until the last few days, he kept fairly quiet because the Trumpistas wanted basically the same things he wanted. As for Corker, he supported Trump in the campaign, so he gets no credit for finally admitting what many of us have known for over two years. If they truly cared about the future of the United States of America, and were willing to try to save it from destruction, they should have been using their position as senators to proclaim loudly and forcefully, over and over, that we were heading for disaster. But instead, they sort of quietly sat on the sidelines until things got so bad that they felt compelled to say something or be forever shamed with allowing the destruction of the United States of America.
