Drexel Professor Under Fire For Satirical ‘White Genocide’ Tweet

George Ciccariello-Maher under fire for a satirical tweet on white genocide

(Reuters) – A Drexel University professor, whose tweet that he wanted a “white genocide” for Christmas sparked a fire storm of criticism from the school and social media users, said on Monday his comment was satirical.

George Ciccariello-Maher, a white assistant professor of history and politics at the Philadelphia university, posted “All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide” on Twitter on Christmas Eve, according to media reports.

He followed up on Sunday by tweeting, “To clarify: when the whites were massacred during the Haitian revolution, that was a good thing indeed.”

Condemnation lit up Twitter after the comments from Ciccariello-Maher, an expert on Latin American social movements, were picked up by such conservative news sites as Breitbart News and The Daily Caller.

“What rock did this cretin crawl out from under?” Sean O’Reilly tweeted. Twitter user Camz wrote, “You want a white genocide, why not be the one who starts it and see where you end up. You coward.”

Drexel University, a private school with about 26,000 students, said in a statement on Sunday that it had contacted Ciccariello-Maher to schedule a meeting about the tweets.

Drexel said that although it recognized the right of faculty members to express their views, the comments were “utterly reprehensible, deeply disturbing, and do not in any way reflect the values of the University.”

Ciccariello-Maher said in an email on Monday that the tweets were only aimed at poking fun at white supremacists and that he and Drexel had become targets of a smear campaign.

He said that the concept of “white genocide” was used by white nationalists to denounce everything from interracial relationships to policies aimed at promoting multiple cultures.

“It is a figment of the racist imagination, it should be mocked, and I’m glad to have mocked it,” Ciccariello-Maher wrote. Access to his Twitter account had been restricted on Monday.

He has drawn online support, with a Change.org petition backing him generating almost 3,000 signatures by Monday.

“Let Drexel know – in the midst of the deafening, organized troll-storm – that racist trolls deserve no platform in dictating academic discourse, let alone the off-duty tweets of academics,” the petition said.

I guess he was too politically incorrect for the triggered right-wingers. Maybe they need an alt-safe space

If someone had tweeted about wanting a Black genocide, he would not be excused by saying it was satirical. But liberals are quick to condemn conservatives and equally quick to forgive fellow liberals, even when they are morons.

Won’t someone think of the neo-Nazis!!!1

PS: I know you’re too much of a hypocrite to understand this, but Trump supporters are CONSTANTLY calling for genocide… and Trump doesn’t disown them.

A White genocide for the so called Alt Right is fine with me ????

  3. Aaron_of_Portsmouth December 27, 2016

I understand that those of us who are more progressive and up-to-date in our thinking and attitudes sometimes harbor the desire to see the alt-right and like-minded people “nuked”, but to idly toss around the “G” word is too much of a reminder of Rwanda, the atrocities of the Nazis, Russia’s attempts to eradicate the Circassians, and America’s attempts at different periods to wipe out the Indigenous population as early settlers moved westward.

It’s time we give serious consideration to the Reality of the Oneness of Humankind, and shake the perception since our emergence as Modern Humans that humans are fundamentally different, with no ties to bind each other. A more humane way of dealing with the alt-right is to require them to take classes on ethics, human evolution, and Spiritual Principles as redefined, clarified, and amplified by Baha’u’llah, if they wish to participate in society as citizens—the rest of us would benefit similarly from the same exposure, except we would most likely volunteer for such exposure.

Otherwise, the Alt-Right and other racists should be given a slice of territory all their own, with tight borders so that no one will ever pollute their “precious bodily fluids”.

The Alt “LEFT” has done most of the mayhem, violence, etc since and during the election:
      Calling for shooting of Cops.
      And actually shooting Cops.
      Burning election centers.
      Violent demonstrations.
Moving to overthrow an elected Govt.
From what I have seen your people on the Left are exhibiting much more violence than the Right.
Just look in here below – someone calling for a “White” Genocide.
What hypocrisy. More violence. Progressive Hypocrits.
Maybe you should be talking to them.

This election was never about Racism, its about the “Left out” Right vs the “Overserved” Left.

“Whites” elected a Black Pres for “2” terms – it was never about Race.
It was about Progressive Policies gone wrong – “Illegal” Immigration, Gun Control, Liberalism tending toward Communism, etal.
It was Large Liberal “Cities”(In the N.E. and West Coast) vs Conservative “States”(the Whole middle of the country). This time the States won. Deal with it.

        Whoa there, horse!
Reread the article. The article is NOT about the election or left versus right. You’re obsessed with partisanship which clouds your mental faculties, steering you away from topic.
You’re a bit delirious as well with your wildly insane generalizations. Also, it doesn’t help to make up cutesy names like “alt-left” just to distract from the conversation and topic. The so-called “alt-Left” is a figment of your imagination—do you have proof of a movement by this mythical alt-left to promote racialism and to purposefully seek out whites to harm as a matter of principle? Has there ever been a sustained effort to do such with the tacit approval of police, mayors, governors, etc?
In the future try to use your mind instead of making up new horse manure offering it as the truth.

Fare thee well, and get some new falsehoods. (What are you defending—ignorance and delirium?)

      2. I Am Helpy December 27, 2016

Wow, that sure is a load of horsecrap you dumped on here.

  4. BH January 6, 2017

If this had been a professor, white or black, that called for a black genocide, the call from the admin would not be for a meeting, it would have been to say you’re fired. And justifiably so. But since most liberals agree with the suggestion, everything is good. Two faced hypocrites!
