#EndorseThis: CBS’s Jamelle Bouie Says ‘Basket Of Deplorables’ Comment Is Statistically Accurate

Share

Appearing on Face The Nation Sunday morning, Jamelle Bouie, CBS political analyst and Slate’s chief political correspondent, broke down the numbers behind Hillary Clinton’s semi-gaffe at a private fundraiser on Friday, where she said half of Trump’s supporters belonged in a “basket of deplorables” — that is, the “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic” elements of his base.

Clinton followed that remark by telling the room about the “other basket of people,” “who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change.”

Though the Democratic nominee has since walked back the “half” part of her original statement, Bouie explained Sunday that Clinton wasn’t far off: 65-75 percent of registered Republican voters believe President Obama is either a Muslim or was not born in America. More than 40 percent of Republicans agree with statements like “blacks are more violent,” and an even greater share of Trump supporters specifically would say that.

To whichever “half” of Trump’s supporters — around 30 million people — Clinton was referring, she has accurately included a great many millions of people who hold explicitly prejudiced and bigoted beliefs.

Whether or not these voters “are not America,” as Clinton claimed, is another story. Donald Trump’s continued success seems to say otherwise.

If you support a racist ,bigoted, misogynist for POTUS you are complicit in their racism, bigotry and misogyny and you therefor forfeit your right to have your feelings hurt.

One of the more entertaining things to come from Hillary exposing the deplorables among Trump supporters is many can’t figure out whether they were the people she was referring to. If you need to ask yourself if she was talking about you, my guess is you probably are one of them.

What she said was the truth. They started the night Obama won in 2008 with the help of a bigoted McConnell and his war cry to not let anything this president wants to fail, make him a one term president, etc. They still continue to keep him from succeeding on ZIKA and when Amb. Stephens requested more security, ignored as late as the night before. They deliberately turned their backs on all these requests to go home and leave the black president hanging. IF Hillary wins, any and everything he wanted will come to fruition, thus the email bs, Benghazi crap and anything else the village idiots can make up.

Jamelle Bouie is someone from another race that refuses to look at the big over all picture. He should ask himself why do so many feel this way about Obama and blacks in general. I, personally, have noticed a downward plunge in the black community since Obama took office. Have murders and robberies gotten worse in these communities since we have gotten a black president, or is it that they weren’t reported on by the media in the past? He answers this and he will then begin to, maybe, understand why so many Trump supporters feel as they do. I was raised to respect everyone, regardless of their race or religion, and if everyone thought like this, maybe we wouldn’t have the problems we seem to be having know. I understand there will always be racists out there in the world, not just in America, and the only way I see to stop it is to be loving and kind to all, not just whites to whites or blacks to blacks or Muslim to Muslim or Catholic to Catholic, but whites to blacks, blacks to whites and people of other religions to others who don’t believe as they do. I as a veteran who has served in other nations have noticed one thing in my many years and that is, most people, regardless of color or nationality, the world over have one thing in common they have loved ones they don’t want to see hurt or abused, the same as we in America do, I have no solution to the problems we are now facing. All I can say is to please try to “Love Your Fellow Man.”

One could also make the argument that had people not been racist to begin with than these problems with black America wouldn’t continue to persist. Time after time black neighborhoods have been passed over for economic
growth and opportunities. Their schools are inferior due to a lack of funding,
some of them still can’t get bank loans so even if they need a small loan to open up a business they can’t get one. Did you know the Federal interstate highway system was purposely designed to bypass black neighborhoods completely?
Probably not, most Americans don’t. We are witnessing the consequences of a systemic wide effort to demoralize our black citizens and it’s working pretty well. And yes, Jamelle Bouie is correct, legions of Trump supporters are white nationalist bent on the continuation of those same policies.

Your right Oddworld, one could make that argument. Can you name me one moment in time when there hasn’t been any racism? I can’t think of one. You seem to be a knowledgeable person, so why do you insist on blaming all whites when it is in fact OUR leaders who are the ones that should be blamed for all the ills we suffer not just blacks but whites as well. You speak of schools being inferior due to a lack of funding, why is that? Stop blaming the white man and start putting the blame where it belongs with, with those in power, people we elect to do OUR bidding be we black or white. Catholic, Muslim or Baptist. I am retired and live in a community with many others, both retired and those that are still working, many of all different ethnic backgrounds. We all share one thing in common regardless of OUR color, we worked very hard to get an education and a decent job.

You don’t make any sense. You say stop blaming the white man and start blaming the ones in power. For the majority of our country’s existence, the white man has been the ones with power. Even today, the majority of power in this country rests in the hands of white people just like the overwhelming amount of wealth rests in white families.

Whites have set the system against minorities as far back as the days of slavery and still today white power does what it can to deny minorities equal rights and equal access to opportunities. A great example is the charter school evil that takes money (funding) AWAY from public schools and gives it to the charter schools, meaning mostly minority students are cheated out of a quality education by the white power structure.

It makes perfect sense if you look at the local level. Blacks leading blacks and making decisions that line their OWN pockets? Sound familiar? It should, it’s how the blacks arrived here in the first place.

You’re correct, Rog….it’s mostly the GOP governors and the other GOP’s in power who have caused the problems we have now with racism, education, lack of funding, etc. Since Reagan and his “trickle-down economy” took place, many states and schools in those states were doing relatively well……now, they’ve cut funding to schools so severely, that it’s a wonder that ANY of our children get a decent education unless you have the money to send them to a private school or a charter school! Look at Kansas and Louisiana for example……they’re both on the brink of bankruptcy due to cutting back funding to areas where it’s the most needed! That “trickle down” theory didn’t work, and it STILL isn’t working….austerity is NOT the answer to our problems. Yes, we ALL worked hard to get a decent education and a decent job, but the children of today are not being given that opportunity…they are being undereducated by choice of the people running the individual states!
Additionally, most of the people “in power” today are white….you might want to consider that.

Why can’t you see that Trump has a vision to change the things that you speak of? The democratic party are the ones who have instituted these programs then, with the graft and corruption among the local democratically controlled representatives, very little gets through for the students benefit. It has nothing to do with racism except that your own party chooses to keep them on the plantation

There’s nothing to “see.” Trump has NO concrete plans to do anything for the poor and middle class…..he’s only going to help his 1% (he’s lowering the tax rate on the super-wealthy, for example). As for education….it’s the GOP’s fault that many of our schools in many states have lost funding due to the fact that the governors have “stolen” monies meant for the schools to pay their other bills! And, your comment about “racism except that y our own party chooses to keep them on the plantation” is totally ridiculous!!! But, then again, you’re one of the brainwashed “deplorables” that Hillary was talking about apparently. Just my opinion!

Let me be the first to tell you that you’re opinion holds no merit!

If bringing jobs back and repairing our crumbling infrastructure is in your “opinion” doing nothing for our poor and middle class then it proves you know nothing.

If you don’t realize that using a tax break as an incentive to create jobs and build manufacturing in this country therefore bringing more tax revenue to the bottom line then you’re a thoughtless boob, making your opinion worthless.

If you can’t see that the democratically controlled cities politicians are the one’s, that in many cases have been pillaging the coffers meant for the very people who elected them then your opinion is again irrelevant.

Finally, if you can’t see that the welfare programs have in many cases enslaved the poor by giving them fish and not teaching them to fish thereby creating a pool of democratic voters for in perpetuity to only further their own greed and power, then YOU are one of Hillary’s brainwashed fools.

Obama has been trying to get the infrastructure rebuilt and its the repubs who have blocked every effort to do so.

Its proven fact that repub politicians seem to delight in taking money from those who really need it and giving it to the privileged class who don’t really need it.

It is fact that people in repub states take much MORE in government aid (welfare, food stamps, etc.) than democrat led states. Also repub states contribute LESS into the tax base that these benefits are paid out from. Brainwashed idiot, look in the mirror–thats the brainwashed idiot you’re looking at.

Well you got me on the lying gaff but when dealing with international politicians who thoroughly believe their an important part of existence you must be able to think and react like them.. Reagan concentrated on a country that we had been in a cold war since dirt, in other national/ international policies he was lacking.. I was a young adult when he came on the scene and was unemployed and starving most of that period (mainly because I didn’t approve of welfare/food stamps but even then it was almost impossible to be approved as my friends had much problems) St. Raygun only appealed to the wealthy and the naive who believed in his BS trickle down scam and still does. Now we have us another airhead who sees himself as St. Raygun ll and has the same mentality as he is slowly directing his attention toward Putin and still not offering anything domestic that would help this nation but would destroy as much liberal programs as possible. You ask him directly and he will not deny what he has in store and this the bigoted fanatics applaud even though it will affect them as well yet they won’t believe it because they hate Hillary Clinton more. Put it this way oldworld, you as a blue collar worker wouldn’t have anything in common when you sit down to discuss matters with a CEO.. He just couldn’t relate to you.. now sit this businessman in a room filled with national and international politicians and see how that would turn out.. And his bragging about hiring the best and smartest advisors? Number one, he’s already said when gathered around with others, make certain your the smartest one in the room and secondly, look at who he’s been hiring to boost his popularity recently.. they too are show horses with nothing in common with politicians or the population at large.. This to me would be a vision of what would come if he slips through the cracks.

I hear you!! I don’t believe Trump is even concerned nor cares about domestic or foreign policy. He’s only interested in winning

To tell you the truth, the way he’s exhibiting I’m not even sure that he cares to win.. If he did he wouldn’t be able to over see his b’ness interests but would be forced to assign them to his kids and the most important element is a down size in salary.. He wouldn’t even be making a million dollars a year.. I think this is making him fudge what millions of sleepers want him to do. I visualize that he wants from 30 but no more than 42% of the votes, just enough to be defeated thereby he could take the nut cases he has around him, buy Breitbart then maybe faux and become another Hannity or pseudo newt with millions of red neck followers, have several ghost writers doing his bio, giving lectures for dollars, blowing wind at Clinton and the democrats and running his b’nesses as usual but no one really knows what’s in the dark hole of his egotistical ‘all for me’ brain pan so it’s just my opinion on the matter.

You’re absolutely correct…..it’s his ego thing. I don’t think he actually thought he’d get this far, and now that he IS this far, his ego and narcissism won’t let him back out! He has NO concept of how to run this country, doesn’t understand that you can’t run the United States like a business (at least NOT his type of business), and that “handing off” the job to his VP is NOT how a president does his job!!!

Pence could very well become the power behind a Trump presidency much like Cheney was the power behind Bush.
Regarding your first statement, it has been suggested more than a few times that Trumps original intent was to shake things up among the GOP establishment so your theory may have some merit.

Personally, I don’t think Pence has the brains of a rock or the wherewithal to be another “Cheney.” All he does is parrot everything that Trump tells him!! It’s pretty sad to watch!

You’d think we would have learned from Reagan (and even “Igor,” the past governor of California) that these “actors” are NOT politicians and neither are most businessmen! But, then again, the RW jokers still think Reagan was the BEST president EVER!!! If they did their homework and researched his administration (most of which were indicted for one crime or the other), they would see that he did more harm to the American people than any president previous to him (and one after him – GWB)! They’d rather just remain uninformed and brainwashed!

True. Unfortunately my sister didn’t have an opinion until Obama was elected. Even then she didn’t pay a whole lot of attention but she like so many others started feeling the pain of the failing economy and put the blame squarely on Obama and the Dems without looking at any other factors. She’s making her decisions based on distorted, personal observations without any research, just emotions. Definitely typical.

Apparently, no one has educated her about the problems that started with Reagan and worked themselves up to GWB!! Without Reagan and his ridiculous “trickle down economy,” and GWB’s unpaid for war with Iraq, we would be enjoying a MUCH better economy

You’re correct in your assessment. Reagan may even be seen as a kind of hero to many in my generation, after all he was the president who ended the Cold War and brought down the Berlin Wall, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL REAGAN!!! You’ll notice my
sarcasm here I hope. I think that is why the GOP resonates with her so strongly but it’s only a guess.

And, what’s really funny, and as I’ve said before…..Reagan brought DOWN a wall, but Trump wants to build UP a wall….how Reaganesce is that? People seem to think Trump is the epitome of Reagan, but he’s the exact opposite! Even the Reagan children are having a hissy fit over Trump’s people saying that he is much like their father!!!

Wasn’t it Ron Reagan Jr. who dropped the bombshell that his father was developing Alzheimer’s during his 2nd term? You said even the Reagan children are having a hissy fit over Trump’s people making the Reagan comparison but I would expect that for two reasons. (1) Although his kids are much more liberal than he was, he was their father and that counts for something and (2) whether you hate Reagan or love him, he did
at least try to project an image of unity among all of us unlike Trump who has gone out of his way to create divisions. An effort that he seems to be quite proud of. In the meantime I’ve got Jim
Samaras pleading with me to consider Trump, he doesn’t hit me with all the usual insults that he does with the rest of you but I can’t seem to get through to him.

I wouldn’t listen to Samaras….he’s as brainwashed as the rest of the Trump followers and wants ALL of us to believe the same lies!! It’s pretty pitiful! As for the Reagan kids….they were VERY upset when Pence spoke at the Reagan Library and tried to liken Trump to Reagan!!! They flat-out told everyone that their father would NEVER have considered voting for someone like Trump! I thought that was pretty admirable coming from them.
Hang in there with Samaras….I just ignore him, and I think I even have him blocked because I got tired of hearing his inane whining!

Question: Why can Trump make stupid off-the-cuff remarks and his followers applaud him, but when Hillary does the very same thing….they go bonkers??? Seems there’s some kind of a bias going on here when one candidate can say something stupid and get accolades, but when the other one does the same thing….they get lambasted!!! Hypocritical anyone?

Do you mean like when Trump says “Make America Great Again” it’s a dog whistle to bigots but when Bill Clinton said it in his 92 campaign and in 08 for his wife’s campaign it was from the heart? I see……

drump and the repubs have made it a giant elephant in the room that they think the first Black president is not really an American, that he has worked to destroy America, that Obama has worked to give too much equality to those whom the repubs and the religious right don’t believe should have the full rights and privileges of the constitution. So when drump says make America great again, everybody knows exactly what he means. It means take America backwards to an earlier time when minorities of all kinds were KEPT in their PLACE like it USED to be in the good ole days.

The US is right now the greatest country in the world. Our economy which was on the brink of another great depression, is the best in the world, right NOW. Our military is the best in the world right now. We are GREAT RIGHT NOW.

Yes, drump’s use of it is a dog whistle to the bigots and has no comparison to Bill Clinton’s use of it in 92 or 08, period!

Folks are tired of the promise of change Obama made and realize that change can only come from an outsider. President Trump, get used to using that term.
