Medicare: Trump’s Most Blatant Bait-and-Switch Lie

affordable health care and Medicare for all

Donald Trump ran as the champion of the “forgotten man,” the working class, those left behind, supposedly. And, because he knew that undermining overwhelmingly popular and necessary entitlements like Social Security was a no-go, he promised to leave them alone. “I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and I am not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid,” he declared.

Lie number .. . . 6,497? We’ve lost count.

As Paul Krugman points out in Friday’s column, the team Trump is assembling is gunning for entitlements. “The transition team’s point man on Social Security is a longtime advocate of privatization,” he writes, “and all indications are that the incoming administration is getting ready to kill Medicare, replacing it with vouchers that can be applied to the purchase of private insurance. Oh, and it’s also likely to raise the age of Medicare eligibility.”

If that sounds in any way like a good idea, Krugman just wants to make three itsy bitsy little points about it, the first of which is that it would be one of the most blatant and cynical violations of a campaign promise in history:

Some readers may recall George W. Bush’s attempt to privatize Social Security, in which he claimed a “mandate” from voters despite having run a campaign entirely focused on other issues. That was bad, but this is much worse — and not just because Mr. Trump lost the popular vote by a significant margin, making any claim of a mandate bizarre.

Candidate Trump ran on exactly the opposite position from the one President-elect Trump seems to be embracing, claiming to be an economic populist defending the (white) working class. Now he’s going to destroy a program that is crucial to that class?

Which brings me to the second point: While Medicare is an essential program for a great majority of Americans, it’s especially important for the white working-class voters who supported Mr. Trump most strongly. Partly that’s because Medicare beneficiaries are considerably whiter than the country as a whole, precisely because they’re older and reflect the demography of an earlier era.

Beyond that, think of what would happen if Medicare didn’t exist. Some older Americans would probably be able to retain health coverage by staying at jobs that come with such coverage. But this option would by and large be available only to those with extensive education: Labor force participation among seniors is strongly correlated with education, in part because the highly educated are healthier than the less educated, and in part because their jobs require less physical effort. Working-class seniors would be left stranded, unable to get the health care they needed.

Krugman’s last point is that it is a complete fabrication that anything needs to be done about Medicare at all. The authors of this particular lie are Paul Ryan and his ilk, who have perpetuated the fiction that there is a valid economic concern about the program. Reality check from Krugman: “Medicare is actually more efficient than private insurance, mainly because it doesn’t spend large sums on overhead and marketing, and, of course, it needn’t make room for profits.”

Of course, there is also the inconvenient truth, which Krugman has long been at pains to point out, that Obamacare has helped rein in the long-term rise in Medicare outlays.

Why do Republicans want to destroy successful government programs? Precisely because they are successful government programs, and they can’t have that. Krugman concludes with a note to the media. Do your job. He firmly believes that once voters know what is actually going on, they will never allow such destruction to happen.

With the inmates fully in charge of the asylum, the chance of a sanity outbreak just got a whole lot lower.

MB…In one word: Oligarchy. Right now you have Dogmeat for president elect whose refuses to live in the White House. You know why. He is a bigot who stupidly believes that he would have to live in a place where not only would his every move be under surveillance but also he would have to live in the same place as a bi racial president. This guy is scum.

Last night on our NY/NJ news stations there were reports that the Secret Service has demanded that 5th Avenue will have to be closed off to delivery trucks, pedestrian traffic and residents will now have to have ID cards to get into Trump Tower apartment suites they pay tens of thousands for.

5th Avenue during the Christmas season is the world’s busiest for the biggest upscale stores. So now the NYPD is having to hire additional police and work their existing force over time. All which is going to be billed according the Gomez, head of the NYPD, to the federal taxpayers.

As for me? I am doing what the Amish would do to someone who scandalizes my society: SHUN. I refuse to say the pledge of allegiance to the Stars and Bars.

Actually, if the years of reading Trump in our papers are an indication…watch how he turns the White House into one of his Hotels. He is after getting rid of most of our historic monuments because as he claims, these “things cost us too much money.”

Yes. He said in an interview on CNN that he doesn’t intend to live in the White House. I guess he thinks that the bi racial family that lived there might somehow rub their race off on him and it’s beneath him to live in a place where a minority has lived. Plus…think about it. He lives in a penthouse…that means that the Secret Service will only have to monitor anyone who has a pass key to the elevator that takes them to the Trump Penthouse. So Trump will get to do whatever he pleases in the Penthouse on taxpayer dollar and no one will know what he is doing.

Mind you, he will still get to collect the rents all while his Trump Tower gets the kind of security his renters will come to resent at the $10,000 or more a month they pay in rent. They are now virtual hostages.

He has no sense of history or awe or pride concerning the office, the Whitehouse or our national monuments and parks. Just his gaudy glass castle. He obviously has no concern about creating a nightmare in NYC trying to provide the security that’s necessary for a POTUS. He wouldn’t care. The nightmare is just getting started.

The Oval Office is being gutted and remodeled, being made more secure. Obama didn’t allow this to start during his Presidency, why it will take awhile. Besides, President Trump won’t take the President’s salary, saving taxpayers money. He also will get rid of earmarks, downsize the Federal Government, making government more receptive to The People. With an improved economy, the removal of 2-3 Million criminal Illegals, and other policies, tax revenue will increase, & expenses will decrease.

We already are. He already asked for security clearance for his entire family whom he claims will also run his business…from Trump Tower? The New Trump Empirical White House? In the busiest city in the world? There is no police department, CIA or Secret service in the world who can be all eyes and ears.

NY City already had a 1993 terrorist attack, the 9/11 attack and the attack on the British Embassy. The sad thing is that if there is another attack thanks to DogMeat’s big mouth, it won’t be just on Trump’s New White House location. It would be big enough to take out half the city.

The republicans have wanted, for years, an “Imperial” government run only by Republicans. Now, they are pretty close to having it. After all, look at what is going to happen to the Supreme Court, as well as how many states have Republican governors. We are basically looking at the end of Democracy as we know it unless we can get someone spectacular to run against Trump in 2020 and take back our government! Otherwise, we can look forward to calling Trump “King Trump.”

What have they got to lose? They’ll be gone in 20 years or less without Medicare.

The reality is that it was ONLY payroll deductions for SS and Medicare that employees who worked for thief employers who offered NO employee benefits now have to rely on. These are the same billionaires who also refused to increase wages. Third World USA here we come.

Trump lied? But wait a minute—everyone swears and rants that it’s Hillary that lies. Trump lied? Well, wasn’t it he who called Ted Cruz “Lying Ted”?

How is it that Trump can accuse others of lying and be a liar himself? These are simple questions that any intelligent person would stop and ponder. But since so many conservatives take a “Fast Food” way of reading and thinking, they can’t be bothered to stop and think deeply, just as Trump has little time for.

Therefore, Trump’s supporters are simply an extension of himself, and vise versa, and each has an affinity for the other. It’s just that Trump is taking the lead by leading his followers around by the nose, like cattle.

Trump won’t do it. He will allow his goons in the cabinet to do it. Since Paul Ryan is determined to destroy both of them (as well as Mitch McConnell), Trump just has to sit by and let all of them wreck what little health policy we have in this country.
I don’t think they will be able to do it – not without a huge outcry — but if they do, the entire hospital system will collapse, because all those people on medicare and social security will simply flood the emergency rooms, and get medical help for free. Myself, included.

Did they attend the Nazi rallies of Trump supporters where the Orange Nut incited them to violence? Did they not think that their safety net might be on Trump and Ryan’s chopping block? The stupidity and the bigotry in America are destroying our great country. I have never been more discouraged, but those of us in opposition to Trump must take lessons from the few Jews remaining in Germany and in Poland in the 1940’s. That lesson is to work against this Trump, by any means necessary. We must not give him a chance as others suggest. Remember that the turtle McConnell met with his cohorts in a townhouse in Washington, D.C. to plot the obstruction of President Obama.

I’ve listened to Pence speak several times. Right now, Trump cannot even take a teaspoon full of food for fear of being poisoned. All the GOP really wants is to use him to overturn everything Obama has done in the last 8 years. So be prepared to get more pollution fines from the polluter states because Pence will march to the back room tune of the Koch boys. He did that in Indiana and he will do it again.

The problem with Trump is he takes no prisoners. Never has. Right now he is playing his usual “selection games” and pretending he is reviewing “candidates” for one of his “contestant shows.” Look at the parade of men he is interviewing. To Trump, it’s not about the country. It’s about HIM.

Whenever I’ve heard Pence speak, all I see is a man so out of touch with the progressives in this country. He makes statements that make NO sense. No Sense Pence and Trump the Hump.

I was a Republican woman from 1966 until 2004. In that party, women do not get to be more than window dressing. As was exhibited when they put Palin out there. They got no where with Bachmannistan and the only reason they love Nikki Haley is because she is one of those delicate flowers of Dixiebellehood.

I rarely bothered to attend too many GOP meetings. Why? Because it was clear the men in the GOP are like some bizarre cultish fraternity. It was always amusing to me to see them pull off the same kind of clique throat cutting that I saw when I worked with 3 CEOs.

So yes. Pence is a YES man. You have to be even if you are a woman in the GOP. Anything less puts you outside their “inner circle.”

The NJ GOP is the best example of that. They only shake hands with Libertarian men when the agenda they are trying to ram down taxpayers throats is to the benefits of both parties.

Trump is not the man who is a “team player.” He is the man who is always the TEAM LEADER. And he makes the rules. Not the Republicans. So this cute little boys game they have going right now is going to bite all of them in their butts.

The GOP needs Trump to keep the hate going so they can do what they want with our tax dollars and repeal everything that save our incomes. But, the joke is that while they are busy doing that, Trump will be busy making sure every single contact he makes in the US or out benefits his Trump Empire. When it comes to conflict of interest? The GOP will look the other way until Trump signs off on the repeal of Roe vs. Wade, the ACA, SS, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Benefits and reinstating the draft.

If ever we are seeing what a spiteful bunch of spoiled, overindulged Republicans we have in this country, the moment is now.

And this was the alt-right cons plan all along. The short term populous memory is legendary. They’ve forgotten how much the GOP despised their Trumpkin which is why they talked him into choosing the white haired smoman instead of his first choice (the fat NJ twinkie slayer).. Their scheme is perfect if it works. First comes the libs who do not want the Trumpkin to even wipe his shoes on the white house welcome mat and if they find some way to oust this guy then the right wing will be totally innocent in starting the next east-west revolution but he must get in first else the plan won’t work.. then if that fails there’s his numerous criminal law suits where just one guilty conviction will cause forced resignation.. they won’t be able to put the blame solely on the libs but that’s okay since their king of the hill congressionally speaking and lastly, the people.. They know the orange haired psychopath won’t be able to follow through on his lies, uh.. I mean ‘promises’ because the libs will protest his wanting to destroy the FDR polices that’s helped so many average Americans and for the things against the cons well, as was mentioned earlier, they’re king of the hill so by treating him in a similar Obama way the people especially his fans will seek blood and possibly even Impeachment leaving their resident puppet to take charge and sign anything and everything the GOP throws at him while the new majority SCOTUS will back it all up.. Yes, the cons have a plan and we as the people will be the damaged collateral.

Trump vows to remove more regulations and, in the book, this is what destroyed the environment. More and more power has been taken by big corporations. In the book two mega corporations owned everything in the world. Those two corporations were the only jobs available. People just might have to put their hand up and say. “stop,” or we will be there someday.

Lying served Trump very well throughout his campaign and he continues to lie to create an alternative reality in which he can control the gullible who believe every word he says.

Now, we were going to be a nice country. It didn’t happen. We have regressed back to the church bombing, home burning, lynching, Jim crow days and things are going to get worse. They will get worse because the decent people did nothing. Because the decent people listened to the propaganda until it stuck. Because people sent their kind to Congress. Because I studied Nazi Germany extensively, I started to feel alarm. These hate mongers, who have won, have children in their homes that are raised on hate. I expect a worse generation coming up.

Much fuss was made of Obama’s “lying” re: “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” He wasn’t really lying, as the ACA made no statement or rule that acquiring an Obamacare policy meant that you needed to change doctors. The problem is, that the ACA is more of an insurance law than a health law, as it puts most of the power into for- profit insurance companies. They set the prices, and many doctors wouldn’t participate in their plans. Surprise, surprise—-Many people who did not have health care for a long time, were much sicker than “expected” when they finally got insurance. What DID they expect? Untreated diabetics already had many of the complications that could have been prevented with adequate care. This snafu of high cost and low reimbursement is the so called “failure” of Obamacare. Ryan and McConnell and all the mean-spirited Christian Republicans in Congress want to cancel Obamacare.
But get this—-they want to replace MEDICARE with a plan exactly like Obamacare, which they malign!!!!. We seniors now automatically get Medicare at age 65, guaranteeing a certain level of care. We individually choose our Medigap policy or supplemental. Medicare is accepted by almost all doctors and hospitals and nursing homes. Medicare, run by the evil government is not for profit, spends no money on advertising and combined with Social Security has lifted numerous elderly out of abject poverty and raised the life expectancy. Maybe that is the problem. Us old people are living too long. On the dole. Wasting money that could buy more weapons.
Ryan’s “voucher ” program gives us a “coupon” to “choose” our insurance product. I would imagine that still leaves a premium of a few hundred dollars a month + oh, say a $6000 a year deductible. A good chunk of seniors would NOT be getting health care. Embarrassing for our modern country who claims to respect life and human rights. Sure solves the problem of having too many old people.
I guess it’s better to save fetuses than their grandparents.
As soon as Ryan gets started on his evil “Better Way”, as he calls it, we seniors need to land like a tsunami on Washington, DC.

Actually the Congressional Budget Office has shown that the ACA has reduced costs in medical care substantially. Social Security and Medicare are quite financially sound and no where near “going bankrupt”. President Obama has reduced taxes, grown jobs, raised the DOW by over 10,000 points (which made every one who saves their money much better off), and cut the unemployment rate over half. I know it’s hard for racists to admit the black guy has been a better POTUS than the white guys but he most definitely has. 🙂

That’s why Trump can’t really get rid of it. Think about. If he did that, the number of Boomers which is the largest portion of the US population right now would end up with NO healthcare and then the government would be forced to hand back every dime we already paid and didn’t get.

Then, there is the matter of McConnell and Ryan’s HMO campaign donors. Take away Medicare and there goes millions in their campaign donations from the very HMOs that provide all of the Medicare supplement.

Jerks of the right are not on Medicare. So they are yet to get the sticker shock. Start collecting SS and already $104/month is deducted for Part B of the 80% of Medicare. The 20% is in the hands of private insurers at a cost of twice that amount. And, it is ONLY for Part B.

That leaves those on Medicare to pay for Part D if they need prescriptions at another monthly premium which only covers PART of the total cost of prescriptions.

Biggest sticker shock for these middle snot nosed punks? SS is taxed annually when you start to collect it. This is little turds don’t want to admit.

If you are on Medicare get ready for an increase in rates and reduced services. And Trump is going to dump Medicaid onto the states so all the busted poor states will have to raise state taxes to pay for their own poor without the federal income redistribution those poor states get now from rich states like NY and CA. Republicans have said Social Security benefits are to be cut and those not receiving Social Security benefits yet will become part of a new scheme of privatized accounts managed by – guess who?! – Wall St bankers. I should know..I worked for ADP for 5 years from 1980 to 1985 and as reports administrator, was charged with the job of keeping records of the NJ state Medicaid and Medicare payroll deductions from employers and employees. Back then the average deduction taken amounted to about $75 a year per employee. I sure it is much more now.

You were collecting them from employee in order to send them to the Feds to use by the agency who over looks the programs. State do contribute to their State Medicaid program and have some autonomy in how it is administered. However, to receive that generous payment from the Feds to run the program they must follow Federal level regulations.

    1. Conducting business using family members he also expects to be allowed to attend government meetings. After JFK appointed RFK, the Republicans were in an all fired hurry to past that “anti nepotism” law which these lousy hypocrites are now ignoring. Laws for Democrats…Never Republicans.
    2. Conduct an investigation into the connection between Trump, WikiLeaks and the Russian hackers who hacked into the DNC emails. But the GOP only knows how to force investigations we pay for on Democrat emails. Even when Trump this past week was caught using his cell phone to text messages to foreign government leaders over a public network accessible by anyone in the free world?
    3. Conduct an investigation into the potential for Conflict of Interest between Trump handing over the reins of his business to family members and still maintaining leadership authority over those businesses.

One reason the Republicans hate the Idea of SS? Read the history of what their Republican President Herbert Hoover did back in the day. It was Hoover who sidled up to Wall Street speculators so that the midwest would earn higher rates of return from the profits of the crops they brought to market.

You know how that ended…Dust storms from soil so badly depleted and millions of Americans out of work and every dime in bank accounts sucked up by Wall Street thieves to avoid having to off themselves.

It was comedienne Phyllis Diller who once joked that when she was a kid in NY, people had to “step over the bodies flying out of the windows of those Ivory Tower offices” the men who lost all their wealth owned.

Read your history of the Robber Barons of the 1900s like Mellon, J.P. Morgan, Carnegie and Vanderbilt. Now every one of their mansions are owned by the government when their wealth all fell apart. They turned those Golden Mansions into museums.

Jay Gould went to prison and several of the top 6 Robber Barons committed suicide when the market crashed in 1929.

to “mess with medicare” or social security for that matter, should concern everyone, because it touches everyone..even if you have held a great job with benefits throughout your life, the first thing that goes away with most companies when you retire, are those benefits..they tell you medicare is the main “payee”, and if your insurance continues by some chance, it is the secondary one and very little is paid..you also must get part d prescription insurance to cover prescriptons, because that too is no longer covered after age 65..if you work, you pay into social security based upon your yearly earnings, and it is your money…by the way, medicare (which was free at one time years ago)is not a “free” medial program anyway..the monthly cost is deducted from your social security benefits..if there are problems with medicare, its not because of those receiving it, but the medical providers trying to scam the system..Donald trump himself stated he was good at using other peoples money (that’s a quote)and there are many others who have the same idea..its immoral!

When Comey said, “It might influence the election if the DNC emails that were hacked were released,” what do YOU call that if not political patronage?

It was okay to release the emails Comey suddenly found 11 days before an election to screw Hillary’s chances though right?

Do you men EVER learn to play fair? Or do women have to teach you that when you slather yourselves in inequity, we will do what you do…in spades.

Sorry..this election was rigged and it was already proven how. A lot of voters, especially women who were in the majority of voters given they are 52% of the population, had their votes altered by Russian hackers. The hackers got that information by hacking into the DNC emails which Comey refused to release because as he publicly stated, “It was too close to the election and might appear to influence it.” You want to explain how in the hell fair it was to release those “NEW” emails he found of Hillary’s 11 days before the election wasn’t political patronage?

You boys are going to get just what you asked. You can blame the Democrats, women and minorities. But White Male privilege isn’t not going to suddenly open the doors to allowing men to beat up on women like Steinberg did to Hedda Nussbaum.

Trump is a thief and a crook. The very fact that a president elect settled out of court for $25 million for that fraudulent Trump University is an admission of guilt.

The only white males who are privileged are the rich ones. The same goes for all other groups. Economic justice settles all scores, please stop telling me i’m privileged because i’m a white male when i don’t feel like that in the least

Well…do tell…why is it the men doing all the griping and now the gloating are white males between the ages of 30 and 55? These are not children. These are grown men who have had more than at least one decade to get settle into careers using the educations they received courtesy of their parents.

You may not feel privileged but you are in fact white, male and privileged. Here is why. As a man, you earn $1 to the 79 cents women in the US earn and that includes women with medical degrees. Are these women privileged? And if you dare to try and tell me that men do not deliberately keep women in second class, I can give you hundreds of examples over the past 4 decades of my employment and business ownership of how many white males deliberately sabotage women of all races, color and creed.

Economic justice applies ONLY to white males. You obviously are trying to ignore that black and Hispanic males with the same college degrees still are not paid equitably. Not white male privilege?

45 white male presidents. Not white male privilege? Of the 10 wealthiest in the US today, according to Forbes, ALL are white males: Sergey Brin, Steve Jennings, Larry Page, Michael Bloomberg, Dimitrios Kambouris, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, Charles Koch, David Koch and the newest, Jeff Bezos.

There is NO economic justice in taking money from the poor and middle class women’s taxes to hand it to rich white males. But you are right. No white male privilege. Just white male bonding that refuses to allow ANY woman to get ahead of you right?

“There is NO economic justice in taking money from the poor and middle class women’s taxes to hand it to rich white males.”

Try to think logically and understand what i’m saying. If money is being transferred from the poor and middle class to the rich, and i agree it is, that should be reversed, and have it transferred from the rich to the poor

Now if most of the rich money are in the hands of white males then they will take the biggest hit. We don’t have to say take things from white males, we can say take things from the rich, who are mostly white males, but that will also include rich women, rich blacks, rich anyone else

If people need assistance and most of those people are women, or blacks, or anyone else we consider minorities then they will get most of that assistance, but that would also include some white males, and it would all be done with NO discrimination……follow? see how basing all things by economics also leads to social justice? does this make sense to you?

Not true. They are definitely privileged compared to all those groups you claim the Democrats “favor,” and it was GOP presidents and conservative Democrats who stood by and did nothing while the wealthy corporate class moved all their jobs offshore. And the best part is, TRUMP himself outsourced much of the work for his companies and employed lots of undocumented immigrants in addition to stiffing lots of American small businesses that did work for him. If you think Trump gives a hoot in Hell for “the ordinary guy,” take a look at the appointments he’s made: plutocrats, anti-labor (not just union), Wall Street paper shufflers who made millions or billions on the suffering of a substantial portion of the idiots who voted for him.

I really see no relevance in your reply to what i said, or where you think i think Trump is good for my interests. If you think however that poor white males should come last simply because they are white and male, then we can never stand united against people like Trump

Sorry Elie, but settlement terms clearly state no admission of guilt. President Trump (doesn’t that sound great!) opted to play nice and give those who couldn’t complete their classwork, some crumbs. As President Trump (that’s sounding better and better!) said, he has more important things to focus on than wasting his time on those whiny butts.

          You’re still an idiot.
Thanks for proving again that “if you can get all the fools on your side, you can be elected to anything.”

All the fools did gather to one side – HilLIARy’s side! Unfortunately for HilLIARy, there were not enough fools like you to overcome ALL her baggage. The $25 million that Trump University paid didn’t come out of President Trump’s pocket. The settlement was agreed to by BOTH sides, with neither side admitting any wrongdoing.
I’m so glad you still think I’m an idiot. If you think that, then I know that just the opposite MUST be the truth.

I kinda agree….Hillary ran a great campaign, but she didn’t focus on the problems at hand. She went for the women vote, the African American vote, the Muslim vote, etc., and failed in some cases to pay attention to the other important things that are needed by ALL people in this country. I hope that future Democrats running for the presidency will learn from this tragedy. You can’t just focus on various groups, you have to focus on EVERYONE.

I don’t agree; not even “sorta.” Any groups the Dems supposedly “favored” were the groups who most NEEDED the focus: the poor and oppressed, and the greedy 1%, the Trumps, and the Kochs, and others who pay a pittance in taxes for the income and privileges they enjoy.
Better – though probably not very realistic – to hope that the IDIOTS who voted for the GOP because they were angry about being screwed by it “learn from this tragedy.” Unfortunately, they likely won’t, but if the Dems change their focus to cater to white racists and those who blame the Democrats for the flight of industry from the country, they might as well keep losing. As it is, they’ve been mostly Republican-lite for decades.

If he does got through with the plan to privatize Medicare, I can’t wait to see the anger when his old white male voters find out what he’s replacing it with. Trust me, they won’t be happy! I don’t foresee him making it through one term, much less a second one! It won’t take long for his followers to realize that he conned them!

As I said above, it’s going to be Nancy Pelosi, or Obama, or George Soros, or even Hillary who screws them, not the sainted Trump. You can’t fix STUPID.

They’ve already “allowed it to happen.” There’s absolutely no excuse for ANYONE to have been taken in by Trump’s lies, despite the poor job the media did in pointing them out.
All those working-class whites who voted for Trump aren’t going to blame him: it will be Nancy Pelosi, Obama, “the liberals,” and – no doubt – Hillary. Does anyone who watched them lap up every lie, regardless of how ridiculously implausible and transparently dishonest – never mind that it contradicted what he said just hours, minutes, or even seconds before – really believe they’ll wake up? These are the people like the guy who traveled – was it 6 hours – to “investigate” the obviously made-up claim that Hillary was conspiring with a pizza shop to run a child sex ring. Are these idiots going to turn against Trump? No, they’re more likely to shoot or otherwise assault the nearest suspected “liberal” the way the same types of people killed or assaulted Sikhs as revenge for 9/11.
