Monica Crowley Declines National Security Post Amid Plagiarism Reports

Monica Crowley

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Monica Crowley, the foreign policy adviser tapped for a White House job under President-elect Donald Trump, will relinquish the post, a transition official told Reuters on Monday.

A Fox News and talk radio personality, Crowley had been chosen to serve as senior director of strategic communications at the National Security Council. Her appointment had been shadowed by reports of plagiarism in news outlets including CNN and Politico.

“After much reflection I have decided to remain in New York to pursue other opportunities and will not be taking a position in the incoming administration,” she said in a statement quoted by the Washington Times.

“I greatly appreciate being asked to be part of President-elect Trump’s team and I will continue to enthusiastically support him and his agenda for American renewal.”

A CNN review found this month that Crowley plagiarized thousands of words of her 2000 dissertation for her Columbia University Ph.D.

In addition, Politico reported that it found more than a dozen examples of plagiarism in Crowley’s Ph.D. dissertation.

She had been hired to work for Trump’s national security adviser, retired General Michael Flynn, who said in a statement quoted by the Washington Times that he will miss the opportunity to have Crowley on his team.

Another scandal. And where there’s a scandal or reports pf malfeasance, Donald is nearby some how.
That PhD needs to be revoked. In the meantime, justice has caught up with another of Trump’s associates. Donald’s turn is coming, in some form or another.
Monica Crowley’s having to bow out due to an inability to act in an above-board manner after irrefutable proof of her plagiarism of other people’s work has been placed at her feet reminds us of another disreputable stealing from others. Melania lifted words from Michelle Obama’s speech and claimed they were her words, Trump taking credit for what others have done/said, having a ghost writer write most of the made up crap in his magnum opus “The Art of the Deal”, is the stuff of legend now.

It makes one think that there is an epidemic of deceit swirling around Trump and all who associate with him.

Aaron, your posts are always well thought-out and concise. I hope Columbia takes a very serious look at her PhD. dissertation. I think they certainly wouldn’t want this kind of stain on their reputation as an ivy league school. But, I read somewhere they will deal with this issue privately, so we may never know. Trump needs to be careful about selecting some of his staff primarily based on how well they come across on Fox News.

      1. Aaron_of_Portsmouth January 17, 2017

You’re quite right that the matter of the dissertation may have to be done privately. No need for me to know how that will wind up—the shame of having her business put out on the street is something she’ll have to live with for the rest of her life.

And, thank you—I try to make an effort to see deeper than what’s on the surface.

Typical Conservative values. Let’s steal other people’s work and claim it as our own, then plead ignorance when we are caught!

Yes, it would appear that this is the new definition of “Moral” for the Party that fancifully came up with the cute descriptor “The Moral Majority”.

She’s a beautiful woman. Trump’s probably been sleeping with her.

Reminds me of Frank Zappa’s question, “What’s the ugliest part of your body?”

      1. Aaron_of_Portsmouth January 17, 2017

Frank was quite a wise guy in his day.

        1. dbtheonly January 18, 2017

And you know the answer, right?

          Never more applicable.

BTW, I’m inclined to give Melania a pass on lifting from Michelle Obama. English is not her first language. Speaking in public is not her career. Politics is not her interest. So, without evidence that she knew of and intended to lift from Mrs. Obama’s speech, I’m inclined to give a pass.

          1. Aaron_of_Portsmouth January 18, 2017

But she knew enough English to say that those were her words. How do you explain that? Would you extend the same latitude to Monica? She might very well say that her thesis were her own words, or that her other publications were her words even though she borrowed generously. Plagiarism by definition means taking from another source and not attributing the source.
So, if you’re inclined to give Melania a pass, let’s be consistent and give everyone a pass.

          2. dbtheonly January 18, 2017

Do you remember the character, “Philia” from “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”? She is there to look good. Nothing more. Melania the same way. She’s got her looks and nothing more. When we ask her to make a serious speech, we need to realize that she’s beyond her skill set.

There’s no evidence that she wrote the speech. Reading plagiarized words don’t count.
There’s no evidence that Melania knew knew her rendition of Mrs. Obama’s thoughts were too similar.

Crowley, on the other hand, plagiarized multiple times in venues where she could be expected to recognize and avoid plagiarism. One’s PhD thesis ought to be held to a higher standard. Crowley is a pundit on Fox. She is there, ostensibly, for more than her looks.

Forgiveness is a major tenant of Christianity. Christians, I, can not refuse to forgive the sins and failings of those I meet at the homeless shelter, at the rehab center, and at the soup kitchen. I can not refuse to look for, and find, the most exculpatory explanations for most actions.

Crowley’s actions are consistent, dangerous, and vilely mean-spirited. I can reject them. What do you have against Melania except she married an idiot for his money?

          3. Aaron_of_Portsmouth January 18, 2017

I don’t wish to concentrate on Melania because that diverts us from the root issue here—namely, Donald, the atmosphere of deception, the nature of those around him, including Melania, and others who reflect or tacitly support his behavior.

With that is mind, Melania was merely incidental in my observation of all that is now swirling around as a direct result of Donald’s influence. Whether we witness it in America, from abroad via Russia, with the awakening of nationalist and racialist influences,a major catalyst is Conservative backlash against change and a materialist motivation, with Trump and Putin serving as a prominent role-models for such behavior.

  4. Aaron_of_Portsmouth January 17, 2017

Any day now there will be another person exposed. Donald has been stripped of decency and is fully exposed in public for all the world to see his numerous flaws which he gaily parades like they’re a fashion statement. Monica Crowley has flourished financially over the years peddling contradictions and hypocrisies as a result of hijacking the work of other people, Melania had the good luck of an exterior that allowed her to make a lot of money appearing half-naked in a variety of settings—these are the sort of values identifying those associated in one way or another with the Party known as “The Moral Majority”.

This is only a sample of the distortion of human nature taking place in the world, and the GOP by-and-large, certain European leaders, many Mid-East leaders, and Russian officials are in the vanguard of this march of decadence, gathering momentum with each passing day. This can only go on for so long before a total breakdown of society in these areas occurs. This current election season is a clear sign of the destruction slowly taking place—Khrushchev in his wildest dreams could never have foreseen the decay from within that would occur in America, while railing about burying America at the UN, ostensibly by using military force. One of the beauties of the natural world, albeit tragic for the host, is the manner in which parasites attack their hosts from within, slowly and silently. Immorality as a result of slackening in developing virtues achieves the same results in human societies, and within individuals. The GOP, sadly, is one group demonstrating that for the world to see up close for the past 8 years, now going on for another few years at least.

Good Lord….will it never end? “After much reflection I have decided to remain in New York to pursue other opportunities and will not be taking a position in the incoming administration.” I would be interested in what those “other opportunities” are in New York that she has chosen to pursue. And I am sure it didn’t take that much “reflection” on her part once she was caught plagiarizing. It’s laughable.

She’ll still be on the team – she will continue to be paid by Fox “News”.
