North Carolina Is Damaging The Republican Brand

On Monday, North Carolina governor Pat McCrory signed into law a package of restrictive voting and election reforms that will disfranchise poor, elderly, and minority voters, while giving big money greater influence in judicial campaigns. Governor McCrory is not only on the wrong side of history, but on the wrong side of public opinion as well.

Among other effects, the law reduces the number of early voting days by one week, requires all voters to show government-issued identification, eliminates same-day voter registration, and repeals the “Voter Owned Elections” program, which allowed public funding of judicial campaigns to reduce the influence of special interests and big-money contributors, who might have business before the court.

A Public Policy Polling survey conducted over the weekend found that just 39 percent of all registered voters in North Carolina support these changes. Importantly, the law finds majority support only among self-identified conservatives. Moderates oppose the law by a 50-point margin, 70 percent to 20 percent.

An election night survey by Democracy Corps and Public Campaign Action Fund survey found significant opposition to the kind of changes just enacted in North Carolina:

  • Early voting: Among all voters in 2012, two thirds (67 percent) supported a plan to extend early voting to all voters. This included 58 percent of Republicans and 60 percent of independents.  Conservative Republicans were the only group for whom this was not a majority position.
  • Campaign money: By a 41 point margin (56 percent to 15 percent), voters supported “a plan to replace the current campaign finance system of large private contributions with one that relies on small contributions and limited public funds.”
  • Expanding voting: By a 53 point margin (67 percent to 14 percent), voters supported “a plan to cut red tape from the voting process to make sure all eligible voters can vote.”

From a political perspective, we cannot help but wonder what this means for the Republican Party’s reputation among moderates, both in North Carolina and nationally. As our recent Democracy Corps work has found, extreme and regressive politics have become constitutive to the Republican brand — which alienates moderate voters. So while the right-wing Republican base might enthusiastically support policies that would disfranchise millions, restrict women’s health choices, and cut taxes for millionaires and food stamps for the working poor, these are minority positions among all voters.

In short, these kinds of policies jeopardize the GOP’s ability to continue as a national party. While Republicans may continue to win elections in the most conservative congressional districts, it will be difficult for Republican presidential candidates to make the kind of broad appeal required to win national office.

Unfortunately, the only way voters are going to be able to get rid of these restrictive laws is through the ballot box.

Typical statement of a shill for the oil/coal industry.

Let me quote you some truth that I found:
“when you cannot breathe the air, nor drink the water nor grow crops, only then will you find that you cannot eat money.”

If you are a Christian (and even if you are not), then you know that we are supposed to be the stewards of this planet. There is NOWHERE ELSE for us to go in time for us to be saved if we do not work to reduce our effects on climate change. Oil and coal industries DO NOT want you to do that, because it takes money out of their pockets.

You may want to live in a polluted world where you can’t grow crops, drink the water or even breathe the air without a protective mask, but I believe that it is safe to say that the rest of us do not….and we want to leave a liveable planet for our children and grandchildren.

Who’s talking about Al Gore. I am talking about reliable science, not the junk pseudo-science that the right wing bubble and creationists adhere to. And in case you still think that climate science is a hoax, then just look around at the median temps worldwide, the fact that one of our national parks that had 150 glaciers 100 years ago now has only 15.

If that isn’t enough, then learn about the funding that is going on to challenge climate science, funded by your buddies in the oil and coal industry. they took their lessons from big tobacco’s playbook.

I don’t think I hate the Tea Party, I even thought when they first came about that it was a tremendous idea, but then I realized they were going for a smaller government and less taxes at the expense of the people that need help the most like the elderly, (we need to take better care of our elderly) and people that really need it, then they give the top two percent a pass. Why if the Tea Party is such a good thing they can’t recruit people from both sides? I think most Democrats would like smaller government and less taxes as well, but not by kicking the ones that are already down.

And based on what you have, thus far defended, you have been voting for the treasonous liars in the GOP. Remember that the POTUS tried to get THREE jobs bills through, but the CONSERVATIVES opposed them all, simply because of their racism and ideological stupidity, putting party above and beyond their SWORN OATHS to the PEOPLE THAT THEY WERE HIRED TO WORK FOR.

So you really do need to stop defending the indefensible. After all, people judge you by the company that you keep. DEEDS are what matter and while you claim that you vote for people, not party, you are certainly defending the party and the people that have shown themselves to be the MOST destructive to this nation.

Deeds, not words, are what speaks the loudest and your deeds show that your words are false. You continued adherence to disproven conspiracy theories about the President, your refusal to accept ACTUAL evidence while only accepting conspiracy theory nonsense, along with the fact that you only trust sites that lean to the right (as far right as possible) and disregard ALL other sources are the deeds of someone who says one thing while doing another. We call that being a hypocrite and it seems to be the most virulent “disease” amongst conservatives. You defend their harmful actions and resort to blatant insults of the president and those who provide actual references, while at the same time providing no references of any worth, yourself. That is not the actions of an honest person, it is the actions of someone who simply spreads propaganda and other lies. And repeating lies without even bothering to check multiple sources while outright dismissing anything that is not on the “approved” list of conservative sources, is not only dishonest, but a disservice to yourself and everyone that you tlk to about any subject covered.

You cannot expect people to respect you, using the “because I say so” argument that the conservatives are so fond of. People are smarter these days and are looking for actions that match words, not actions that contradict them.

And you believed that when the opposite has been historically demonstrated to be true.

And stop with that “Barry” crap. it has already been repeatedly debunked.
You are simply using it as an insult, which is a dishonest method of arguing, it is not making you any points and is certainly proving what everyone has been saying about you being just another right wing fool that disregards facts and historical evidence. The fact that you insist on using that is more proof that you haven’t the wit to make an informed voting decision and your defense of a treasonous Congress shows that you are as much a traitor as they are.

That isn’t being insulting, it is just telling you what the real world think of people that refuse to leave the right wing bubble of delusion.

Remember that it was government jobs that kick-started our economy during the Great Depression, along with Glass-Steagel regulating the banks and financial institutions. It was under Bush and a house and Senate GOP majority that those regulations were torn apart and “de-fanged”, allowing our economy to crash. It was also a CONSERVATIVE SCOTUS that allowed Citizens United to happen, creating even more corruption than ever seen before in our election process, through uncontrolled election spending.

It is conservative policies that have made us into the new “Roman Empire”. Since you are completely ignorant of history, I will explain that: Rome fell because of a number of factors, and anyone that is awake and aware can see that happening here: uncontrolled and corrupt electioneering, corruption of our politicians through lobbyists, evangelical religion seeping into government rules and, thanks to Bush Jr., a system of empirebuilding and uncontrolled government spending on that empire building. And those are just the major similarities.
Our MIC has the highest spending of the next ten highest spending nations COMBINED. If we spent what we spent on the TWO ILLEGAL WARS that Bush Jr. got us into, we could eradicate poverty in this country and STILL have a balanced budget WITH A SURPLUS.

I know that your lords and masters in the right wing bubble don’t want you to know that, but every legitimate economist does know that, as do all of the people that are more concerned for the country than they are for defending conservatism or the GOP.

We all know what YOU defend, and it is NOT our constitutional, democratic republic.

Again, this whole “Barry” thing….get over yourself and stop trying to promote your propaganda.

FACTS PROVE that government jobs kick-start a weak private sector market. The first jobs bill that got us out of the Great depression is enough proof of that for any intelligent person. But if that is not enough for you then let me disabuse you of your propaganda-induced ignorance with a few more facts.

            1. We have a failing infrastructure with more than 80% of our bridges, tunnels, roads and rail lines in desperate need of rebuilding or replacing.

            2. The private sector corporations, who have shown MASSIVE profits, received MASSIVE amounts of government welfare money and paid little to no taxes as they shuttle most of their profits into off-shore and untaxible accounts while the rest of the economy has tanked, have simultaneously refused to step up and do their part.

            3. Government funded jobs to do what you “conservatives” claim that corporations will do, yet have not done; i.e. PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT which helps the economy through having MORE people paying taxes and putting money back into the real backbone of the economy, small businesses.

These infrastructure jobs help EVERYONE and do a lot more than just help the unemployed.

Fact is that the unemployed/underemployed actually WANT to work, get a fair and living wage and do what is right, but thanks to traitors, like yourself, who demand that the propaganda is correct and the facts are not, keep preventing this country from moving forward and getting back to it’s rightful place as a world leader, instead of where your kind has taken it; to a world conqueror.

What you support makes your words a lie, plain and simple and you are clearly determined to tell the lie enough times that you think people should believe it is truth.
Well, history and mathematics shows that you are wrong.

It doesn’t matter how often you tell a lie, it will never be true.

It doesn’t matter how many tax breaks you give to the rich, TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS (also called voodoo economics or reaganomics) DOES NOT WORK AND NEVER DID.

Only a fool would fail to believe the evidence of history when is st right in front of him, staring him in the face. No one here is going to buy the lie that you are selling, so give up and crawl back into that right wing echo chamber that you crawled out of. Clearly you did not leave the dark to experience the light; you came to the light to turn it off.

“They stand for smaller government, and less wasteful spening. I’m not sure why you don’t like that.”

That’s your problem, gvette. That’s how YOU, yourself, view the Tea Party. Here are some real-world perspectives on the TP:

            1) They only care about children in the womb. Once born, they’re on their own — forget about child care, education, food, and a decent wage for the parent(s) who’s probably making a sub-human minimum wage at two jobs (each). I have no idea how/why the abortion issue is part of “Taxed Enough, Already.”

            2) Re smaller government: Unless, of course, that “smaller government” hurts them. Don’t take dollars out of the military. Don’t let FEMA help millions in NY, NJ, etc., but cry when AZ loses 145 homes in a wild fire. The dollars-in/dollars out ratio between individual states and the Federal budget shows extreme largesse to the “red” states. The “blue” states get back far less than they put into the pot.

Just a few quick examples, there…

            3) The TP gets involved in all sorts of conservative issues that have nothing to do with “smaller government”. It takes an extremist right-wing, Bible-based position at nearly every possibility. They forget that a) religion has zero place in our government, per the Constitution, and b) that perhaps, just perhaps, like it or not, there are citizens of this Nation who hold religious beliefs other than, explicitly, theirs.

            4) The TP positions always carve a dividing line between the “haves” and the “have-nots”. Somehow this always becomes an “I’ve got mine; screw you” message — which somehow doesn’t quite gibe with the Christian message of “Love thy neighbor.” You wonder why the TP is so unliked?

I could go on. You may “vote for a person” but, then, why does that person always deliver a message of miserly isolationism? And why does the TP push such a stupid, wasteful agenda in Congress, like 40 votes to repeal the ACA — an exercise that will, every time, result in… going nowhere. Instead of crying about what it is the TP doesn’t like — why does it not issue some concrete proposals on how to fix its perceived problems without merely saying, “Let half the Nation starve.”

I’d actually have fun watching Tea Partiers try to survive under its proposed agenda without complaint, were such a program not so detrimental to the health of this Nation.

Of course that’s what that troll meant. And also “left” is only pejorative when a troll uses it. I think it only comes here to get bashed because there sure isn’t anything creative or fresh from it. Same old troll trash all the time. One like all the others. They probably have the same face.

I’m sure that it’s worth a laugh, since Fox isn’t really a news netwrok; particularly after they won that lawsuit that allows them to LIE and call it news. But you wouldn’t have heard about that because that is not something that they want their viewers to actually know about, since it would destroy what limited credibility they ever had in the first place.

That would make it PROPAGANDA, not news.

Actually, it is conservatives that hate the truth, which explains why so many listen to Fox propaganda and that college dropout, Rush. It also explains why only red states try to rewrite history in a propagandist bent and why the GOP can so easilly be compared to the NAZIS and Stalinists, particularly in light of the massive propaganda network that they have built up, not unlike Hitler’s minister of information, Josef Goebbels.

The problem here is that people like you have this idea that a single source of “information” is factual and you refuse to accept that it could be wrong. Maybe it’s because it is attractive to your personal sense of ethnocentricity, racial bias, religious bias or whatever other bias you may have, but that, does not make it either factual or truthful.

You blast democrats, and probably moderates as well, because we trust the facts that are right in front of us, the history that has shown us to be right and you wrong, the EVIDENCE that people like you blatantly ignore.

That makes us smarter and wiser than the likes of you, at least until you get a better grip on reality and actual facts, then you become one of us. I know because I saw what the GOP was doing and I recognized it for what it was. I have seen it repeated in history and I left that vile, anti-American party altogether and will never return until they grow up and stop lying to the American people like the traitors they are.

When you get better educated and informed, you will, too.

We don’t have a lot of that right now. Just hitting a couple things. Your friend, Barry, is as close to a communist, as anyone I’ve ever seen. Remember his

            Let’s address those issues.

            1. The people that are conservatives in this country are leaning, more and more to extreme, fascist religions (Christianity in this case) and have more in common with Muslim terrorists than with the framers of the Constitution.

            And if you happen to be one of those idiot birthers as well;

            http://www.factcheck.org/2008/08/born-in-the-usa/

            http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/birthcertificate.asp

            2. Modern Conservatives, beyond their racist leanings, as a whole (the whole “Barry” thing, you need to drop because your Klan robes are showing), and are also followers of the Ayn Rand philosophies which are the writings of an ATHEIST COMMUNIST. You cannot claim that we are a Christian nation and still hold the poor and minorities in disdain and contempt.

            http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/04/03/40-quotes-demonstrating-the-conservative-values-republicans-want-to-destroy-america-with/

            3. The words you use: “Communist”; you have no clue as to what that word actually means. you are simply parroting the meme from the propaganda arms of the GOP (Fox, Rush, Hannity) and the birthers who ignore reality and evidence.

Here’s the actual definition of “communism”
            com·mu·nism [kom-yuh-niz-uhm]
            noun
            1. a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state.
            2. ( often initial capital letter ) a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.
            3. ( initial capital letter ) the principles and practices of the Communist party.
            4. communalism.

See, the word Communist is actually more alligned with the “STATED” conservative values than the actual values that you place on the word.

And the president is not even close to creating a communist society.

            3. Let’s address your claims that “conservatives” like yourself are actually interested in the best interests of these United States and it’s Constitution.
The fact is that CONSERVATIVES are the antithesis of what this country was founded on and, during the revolution supported British rule, during the Civil War promoted and supported slavery and extreme religious views, then went on to oppose every advance in this country from allowing blacks to marry to the ERA. They opposed allowing women in the military, claiming that it would be our downfall; it was not. They opposed blacks in combat roles as fighter pilots, claiming that they were inferior, proven to be an outright lie by the Tuskeegee Airmen, who had a battle record comparable to white pilots. They opposed gay rights, even when the scientific evidence shows that sexuality is not a “choice” but how each person is born.

Now on to their fiscal policies. Let’s start with this idiotic and FAILED idea of “austerity”; the only ones gaining from that program are the richest Americans, the rest of the country is being taken down the path to poverty.

And how about the deregulation of Wall Street and the corporations? We did that, under the rule of CONSERVATIVES and it nearly destroyed this country with rampant spending, reduced taxes on those who could MOST afford to pay (which our founders even opposed), shipping American jobs overseas and blaming the job losses on immigrants to distract us all from the real traitors and criminals; CONSERVATIVES.

You are living in a LIBERAL, SECULAR nation and being a conservative in such a nation is antithetical to moving said nation forward. We did not advance and become a world super power because of “conservative” principle, we did it on LIBERAL principles. Study some actual history. Our boom times (since the democrats became liberal and the GOP became conservatives – some time around the beginning of the 20th century) were always under LIBERAL (today, democrat) leadership, and our hardest days were under conservative leadership.

The economy crashed under BUSH JR, who took more days off in his first YEAR in office than Obama took in his entire first term. As a matter of fact, Obama could take the rest of his presidency off and still not come close to the number of days that Bush did during his reign of terror.

It was under Conservative leadership (POTUS, House majority and Senate majority) that the economy tanked and deregulation became the norm.

Let’s look at the difference between the Conservatives and the “liberals”, shall we?
            A) The Conservatives have far more religious extremists in that group, who support the idea of creating a theocracy in this country, ignoring their own Christian sharia so that they can claim that they are opposing the equally bad Islamic sharia.

            B) Conservatives have yet to produce even a single Rhodes Scholar in their entire existence, yet the “liberals” have produced 2 in just recent history. Even prominent conservatives have said, in public and for the record, that they are not the party of smart people. Well their mismanagement and hostage holding of our economy proves that.

Still think that being a “conservative” is good for the country? You would be so horribly wrong as to be a laughing stock. Of course, being far left liberal is not really any better as both extremes are wrong for this country.

And by the way, I am neither liberal, nor conservative. I am a moderate, a veteran, and an American that has a history in this country going back to it’s founding, so I have a true vested interest in it’s well-being. Can you honestly say that you have that vested interest when you ignore facts and simply spout propaganda that has been disproved time and time again by facts and history?

            Think on that.

You already told us you’re a conservative. You didn’t have to. We can tell by what you say (not to mention by how you say it).

You vote for people. Correct. But I’m willing to lay odds that every one of the people you voted for in the last thirty years (assuming you’re that old) is/was on the Republican or Conservative or Libertarian line. Not a progressive in sight.

“Barry is close to a communist.” You need to do a few things. First, study some history and philosophy. Read some Marx and Engels, if you can deal with big words and actually comprehend them. You also need to develop a sense of respect for those with whom you disagree. As long as you persist in (implied) pejoratives such as “Barry” you won’t gain a lot of credence. You don’t have to use terms of respect such as “President Obama” but simply saying “Obama” might be a good step.

Next. What is it that is “Government-run”? I’ll anticipate your answer. The ACA (a/k/a “Obamacare”) is not health care run by the government. It uses private insurance companies. It sets up rules saying that private insurance companies can’t cherry-pick just the healthy — if someone wants insurance, they get it. It mandates that premiums are actually used to pay claims, not just CEO compensation packages and advertising. Who is “disarming” us? You must be one of those who like having 2,000 nuclear missiles standing at the ready to use against … whom?

“Lennon was a great guy.” Is that John Lennon? Perhaps the man who fathered the Lennon Sisters? Ahhh! (lightbulb moment!) You must mean Lenin! If I didn’t choose to comment about your incredibly poor grammar/spelling, I’d seriously pick upon things like this. Your severe lack of education is hanging out for all the world to see. You could use a bit of it — it might help. In the meantime, the best thing you could probably do for the cause of the Tea Party is to stay quiet.

You might want to read up a little more on bamacare! It’s forced by the government, with the IRS doing the enforcing. That pretty much makes it government run. I know you think this is a good idea, but just wait till it’s in full swing. you’ll be talking different.

          61. Lisztman August 22, 2013

No. Rules from the government does NOT mean it’s “run by the government.” Insurance is still provided by all the “traditional” Insurance Companies. The ACA gives them some rules to ensure that everyone can get health insurance.

The ONLY part that the IRS plays in this (ahh! “The IRS.” A trigger point. Something to set you off.) is that they are making sure that everyone has health insurance — to eliminate the moochers who show up in the ER and want treatment but don’t have a way to pay for it. (C’mon, gvette. You right-wingers are supposed to be against moochers, right?) This is the part that Justice Roberts called a “tax”, remember? The IRS has NOTHING ELSE to do with Obamacare.

I won’t be “talking different”. I’ve looked at the program. I see very little wrong with it. There are some things I might have preferred were done differently — but, you see, the members of the 111th Congress knew how to negotiate and compromise to pass something that was actually acceptable to all and could be made into law. A concept for which the present 113th Congress is sorely lacking. If you put up a bill acknowledging the sky is blue it wouldn’t pass this House because someone would insist on saying it’s so because God made it that way. What a bunch of pissant do-nothings and obstructionists in the present House.

These people are not capable of accepting the verifiable evil their party is capable of. I used to be open to voting for Republicans as well but, never again. Often when I come across those incapable of ‘critical thinking’ I send them to an article written by a Republican whom faithfully served his party in Washington DC, for some twenty-eight years. His name is ‘Mike Lofgren’ and he wrote what I consider the most honest appraisal of the GOP, I have ever read, entitled “Goodbye to All That” ‘Reflection’s of a Republican Operative Who Left the Cult’. In breathtaking – take no prisoners fashion he leaves no doubt that 90% of our ills come from the determined malfeasance of the party he gave the best years of his life to. You cannot help but be grateful for his decency, integrity and very high level of intelligence. If you haven’t read it – look it up, it’s well worth it.

In my younger days, I was very conservative, long family history of being a republican. Of course the party changed from what it was in my grandfather’s day, before WWII, so when I saw what they were becoming and trying to do to my beloved, imperfect, but still salvageable nation, I had to jump ship and go independent as a moderate.

I will have to find that book that you mention; I have seen it before, but just don’t have as much time to read as I used to. I’m sure I can get it on kindle. I can add it to my library of historical and political books.

Their schools rank the lowest in the country, except for playing football, basketball, and pom pom awards. Their medical facilities rank the lowest levels in the country So what do they lead the country in? NY comes in at #9 — receiving $0.79 in Federal funds for each dollar put in (2007 data). Find your nice, favored, Tea Party states — they’re all at the bottom of the list. NY may be on the verge of “broke” — but it’s not getting much help from Washington.

Which has NOTHING to do with the Federal tax budget. Syracuse has a set of problems caused by a) its reliance for many years on large corporations which moved south when, yes, NY tax policy pushed them to it 20, 30 years ago. b) a continuation of tax policy that sends manufacturing overseas.

I can’t speak for Syracuse city management. I’m closer to Albany. But I know Syracuse well — my wife is a graduate of SUNY Cortland, and I spent a ton of time in Syracuse.

But you’re sidestepping the question. The problems of Syracuse, or Detroit, are not unique to blue states. Try Grimes County, TX. Jefferson County, AL. Omaha, NE. Boise County, ID. Fiscal problems in places like Syracuse (or, more to the point, like Detroit, or Los Angeles) get more press because the affected populations are that much greater.

You’ve managed to try to move the topic of discussion to fiscal policy in a medium-size city that happens to be in a blue state and happens, presumably, to have Democratic leadership. Won’t work. The discussion is “What has happened to the Republican brand” and, more recently in the thread, what are national problems. That’s large-scale stuff. Or perhaps you got tired of trying to convince us that our president is a communist.

Good morning. Unfortunatly, long time politicians are more interested in themselves. That pretty much goes on with all of them. One of the reasons I would like to see term limits. State, and federal. I chuckle here a little. In Ny, look no farther then Sheldon Silver.

It would be nice if, even so much as once, you had your facts straight:

            1. In the past three years, the deficit has fallen faster than in any three-year stretch since World War II. Republicans do a nice job of scaring people about the deficit. But they’re in denial of a few basic facts. The deficit President Obama inherited was over $1 trillion—entirely the result of President Bush’s policies combined with the cost of the wars and the bad economy. Yes, President Obama continued the Afghanistan War and temporarily extended the Bush tax cuts for the rich—two of the only Obama policies the Republicans endorsed. Still, the deficit is shrinking fast.
“From fiscal 2009 to fiscal 2012, the deficit shrank 3.1 percentage points, from 10.1 percent to 7 percent of GDP,” according to Investors’ Business Daily.

            2. The U.S. recovery has been one of the best in the world.
Since the financial crisis began on Wall Street and spread across the globe, America’s recovery has been frustrating but it is still the “sole bright spot of the world.”

Meanwhile, Europe has fallen into recession after dramatic spending cuts made worse by the uncertainty of their weak monetary union. Individual states united by a common currency making their own decisions, along with huge spending cuts, sounds exactly like the Republican agenda. Aren’t you glad we didn’t go along with that?

            3. The GOP is the food-stamp party.
Yes, most counties where food-stamp consumption is growing vote Republican. The states that contribute the most federal taxesalmost all vote Democratic, while all of the lowest tax-contributing states vote Republican. Despite preaching personal responsibility, the GOP encourages food-stamp consumption by cutting education and cracking down on unions that ensure workers earn a living wage. Yes, about 40 percent of those on food stamps work, but don’t earn enough to get off assistance.

            4. Ronald Reagan socialized medicine in the United States.
Democrats love to point out that after Ronald Reagan cut federal taxes drastically, he raised them over and over. He also compromised with Democrats before Republicans discovered that was explicitly forbidden in the Bible.
But most Republicans don’t know that one of the reasons our health care system is the most expensive in the world (while 30-40 million Americans remain uninsured) is because Ronald Reagan signed the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, which mandates that no emergency room may turn a patient away because he or she cannot pay. When that he or she cannot pay, guess who does?
Romneycare was the first attempt to do away with this “free rider” system. And guess what Romneycare became?

            5. America creates more jobs when a Democrat is in the White House.
And here’s some good news to cheer your crazy Republican uncle. He’s probably oblivious to the fact that the housing market is recovering dramatically. Housing starts are at a four-year high and home prices leapt last month, again. If that doesn’t still him, you may to defer to the favorite fact of the Secretary of Explaing Sh*t, Bill Clinton:

In the 51 years since President Kennedy took the oath of
office, Republicans have had 28 years in the White House; Democrats have had 23. In the same half-century, the economy has produced 66 million private-sector jobs—42 million of them under the Democrats, 24 million under the Republicans.

And while I have my nose up no one’s ass, you certainly sound like yours is embedded all the way up to your neck in right wing conspiracy websites.

At least, when I make a claim, I DO provide proof. Though, if you actually saw it then it is probably up there on the internet and could be found with a google search, not that I would waste much of my time to hunt it up, but I might take a look at Snopes or factcheck and see if it’s there. Since they debunk so many of the loony things that you conservatives believe and take on faith without checking for yourself.

            http://www.factcheck.org/2010/02/obama-at-columbia-university/

“Q: Is it true that nobody remembers Obama attending Columbia University?

A: At least one of his classmates remembers him well, and the university proudly claims Obama.

            FULL QUESTION

Can you check this out and see if it is true?

            Thank you!

I have always wondered why NO ONE ever came forward from Obama’s past saying they knew him, attended school with him, was his friend, etc. NO ONE, not one person has ever come forward from his past. VERY VERY STRANGE.

This should really be a cause for great concern.

            FULL ANSWER

We’re not sure why, but this false claim has been forwarded widely in
recent days, judging by the number of queries we’ve received.

Barack Obama was a transfer student from California’s Occidental College when he came to Columbia University in 1981 as a 20-year-old junior. More than 20,000 students
currently attend Columbia. The enrollment in the early ’80s might have
been lower, but not everybody would have met or remembered Obama. And
it’s absolutely untrue that “not one person has ever come forward” from
his years there, or that he is “the man who wasn’t there.”

Columbia University proudly claims Obama as a 1983 graduate. The university magazine Columbia College Today profiled him as far back as 2005, after he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

Last year, the New York Times wrote about Phil Boerner, who roomed with the future president
during his first year at Columbia. The article included excerpts from
the Columbia student directory, showing Obama living during his junior
year at 142 West 109th Street near Columbia’s campus in New York City,
and during his senior year at 339 East 94th Street. Boerner recalled
that Obama sometimes wrapped himself in a sleeping bag to keep warm in
the chilly apartment they shared, and that some nights he would cook
            chicken curry for dinner.

In an article published in Columbia College Today, Boerner also wrote:

Boerner: I remember often eating breakfast with
Barack at Tom’s Restaurant on Broadway. Occasionally we went to The West
End for beers. We enjoyed exploring museums such as the Guggenheim, the
Met and the American Museum of Natural History, and browsing in
bookstores such as the Strand and the Barnes & Noble opposite
Columbia. We both liked taking long walks down Broadway on a Sunday
afternoon, and listening to the silence of Central Park after a big
snow. I also remember jogging the loop around Central Park with Barack.

Obama even published an article in a school magazine called the Sundial. A reporter for the conservative Human Events magazine recently called it “a wholesale endorsement of all sorts of leftist claptrap fashionable at the time.” The full article is available on the Web site of Politico.com. It was published in the issue dated March 10, 1983.

The e-mail incorrectly claims that ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos
was a classmate of Obama. They were both students at Columbia for about
one academic year, but Stephanopoulos was a year ahead. Obama received
his degree in 1983, while Stephanopoulos received his a year earlier, according to a university press release. Neither of them were “class of 1984,” as the message incorrectly claims.

The message recycles — and exaggerates to the point of falsification —
some attacks that were raised in the heat of the 2008 presidential
campaign. The claim that Fox News could not find any classmates who
remembered Obama, for example, was published in a Sept. 11, 2008, Wall Street Journal editorial,
which attacked then-candidate Obama for not releasing more information
about his two years at the university. The message also makes much of
Wayne Allyn Root’s statement in an interview that he didn’t know anybody
who remembered Obama at Columbia. That appeared Sept. 5, 2008, in Reason
magazine. What the message fails to mention is that Root was at the
time a candidate for vice president on the Libertarian ticket. Root was
stating that “[a] vote for Obama is four years of Karl Marx,” but even
Root stopped short of claiming that Obama was not actually a student at
            Columbia.

            –Brooks Jackson

Update, Feb. 23: After we published this item, we received an
e-mail from a woman who says she knew Obama when he was at Columbia. You
can read her recollection of playing soccer with Obama on campus in our
            FactCheck Mailbag.

Correction, March 16: We originally used a quote from Phil
Boerner, Obama’s roommate at Columbia, that referred to their time
together at Occidental College. We have changed that quote to another of
Boerner’s recollections about their time at Columbia.

Well, I never make a statement that a particular site is not in question if they at least have the integrity to state who is behind the site/post and provide verifiable references, such as a bibliography of resources, such as one finds in the fact-checking sites or through legitimate news sites, unlike what the conspiracy nuts rely on. This is why sources like Wikipedia, which is getting slightly better than it was, is never in my list of “reliable sources”, because it is too easily used for disinformation and the spread of questionable sources.

when people like gvette keeps going on and on about the facts that are so easily found on both government websites and legitimate news sources (as opposed to Fox), it is aggravating that they lack the wit to bother to verify anything that they spew while claiming that they support facts while simultaneously ignoring those facts that are demonstrated.

It really is like trying to explain science to a creationist.

As proof that you are lying, Take note that you have still not answered any actual questions or requests for legitimate evidence to support your opinion.

Your failure to address those questions is VERY telling….not about me, but about YOU.

Sorry, but this is not the conservative bubble here. Opinions are not facts in the real world; EVIDENCE is fact.

So, in essence, you made my point that, perhaps, you are NOT as intelligent as you claim to be, nor as intelligent or educated or experienced as I am.

Being able to craft a good sounding argument is not nearly as good as being able to PROVE what you claim with facts and evidence.

Come back when you have some facts and evidence, preferably from non-right wing sources. As for your shilling for the oil/coal industry, well, the fact that you cannot support your arguments with any disinterested 3rd party sources, is also very telling. I sent you to the National Science Center which is a real SCIENCE organization. they support the scientific principle of using evidence and fact, not rhetoric and disinformation (aka half-turth or lies).

Either prove that your opinions have some solid proof or admit that you have been duped by the conservative cult, learn from that and move on.

Alternatively, you can continue as you have been going, but you are only digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole of your own making.

President Bush did a five year study on this and the end result was 86 cases of which most were because of not understanding, filling out paper work incorrectly, etc. There is my proof and it was done by a Republican President with a Republican DOJ – nothing to see here move right along.

Cannot keep up with all of what I read, but either South Carolina or Georgia did an investigation into voter fraud, and they found nothing, noda, zilch. Not a single case of voter fraud that had any credible evidence. Just empty accusations.

I honestly don’t understand why the most repressed and backward thinkers in this country seem to have the loudest voice. The country is moving forward whether you like it or not. We will not return to the 50’s because they weren’t so great. Not unless you were a conservative white guy…I guess then they probably rocked. But the country is made of up of a wonderful melting pot of diversity with regards to gender, race, religion and sexual preference. You can shout it as long as you want, but your backward way of thinking will not prevail. You’re on the wrong side of history. Say whatever you want back. It doesn’t bother me because I’m certain that you’re an imbecile.

This is a joke, right? How about some legitimate sources, such as when they found that the GOP’s OWN INVESTIGATIONS found that there was much more voter fraud by the Republicans than ALL OTHER POLITICAL GROUPS COMBINED? There were others convicted as well and no telling who else got away with it. There were also reports of Obama votes turning to Romney votes on machines, more votes for Obama than population in a county, and union leaders have admitted to putting illegal aliens on the voter rolls in Nevada. I know you libs(despite your claims of being tolerant and open minded of other opinions)like to stomp your feet, close your ears, and call names like children and then get on to Republicans for doing the same thing, but you can’t stomp out the facts. Grow up! Obama isn’t God and Democratic politicians are no different than Republican ones. They all lie, cheat and say anything to get votes.

And your mentioning that long defunct terrorist group why, precisely? Also, work on your spelling. What you know about terrorism and what I know, from my training and experience, of terrorism and those groups, is as different as night and day.

You choose to make attack statements as an attack against the person who disputes your arguments with facts. YOU are coming to battle with a plastic sword. Not a good strategy.

You lost before you even started, because, deep down, you already knew that you were wrong before this even started.

You lost because you don’t debate like an intelligent person, you debate like a zealot, ignoring fact and reason because it disputes your ideology and shatters your world view. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD, where delusions get shattered all the time.

You lost because you almost immediately jumped into name-calling and insults instead of addressing the actual issues.

You lost because you argue using methods which are dishonest, placing doubt on the validity of your position, a fact that even you cannot escape because when you have to lie or distract away from the immediate issue it shows that you have no legitimate response. Kind of like attacking the messenger instead of addressing the actual issue at hand.

You lost because, instead of presenting actual facts, you used the “because I said so” argument, so common amongst right wingers, Vegans, religious nuts, extremists, scientologists and creationists.

But mostly you lost because you came into an intellectual conversation completely unarmed and unprepared to have to defend your own unsupportable accusations and claims.

Come back when you are worthy to debate people smarter, wiser and more experienced and aware of history and facts than you are now.

Voters with a disability are also threatened with the loss of their vote. Many blind and paralyzed individuals do not have driver’s licences. And with an estimated 20% of the voting age electorate having one or more disabilities, these are significant numbers. They are also likely to need government support, being far more likely to be poor. In other words, they are usually Democrats.

It seems that they will do anything, including selling their souls to the devil, to block votes they think likely be for democrats. I don’t have a lot of respect for either side these days, but if you are worried about any political group subverting the constitution you had better keep a close eye on the new Tea Party-driven Republican Party.

The corporate fascist threat to our Democratic Republic has existed for ages.I just have never seen it raise its ugly head to this extent in my sixty one years until now.The Kochs alone would be bad enough but our government is absolutely corrupted with corporate influence.I have the info available but don’t really care to invest the time and typing to share it with you right now,but when you look into the undue influence that just one company like Monsanto has on us it is staggering. So many former top echelon employees from Monsanto hold or have held key government positions it truly blows the mind.

Because of all of that and more, we have become the Roman empire; and it is all because of conservative policies that want to “take this country back”. What they don’t tell you is that they want to take the country back to the bronze age.

I forget who originally said it, but it is certainly proving to be true as long as these conservatives hold power: “Fascism will come to America draped in the flag and carrying a cross”.

They don’t care how many voters disapprove of their policies. In the first place, the same folks who tell reporters they don’t like what a GOP politician is doing will cast their votes for ANYONE with R after the name, including the very same politicians that passed that policy, rather than a D who will change the policies (even the policies they DON’T LIKE). It’s almost like a memory failure … Romnesia.

And in the second place, they will just make sure that only the voters who will vote FOR them will be able to vote!

Implicit in taking polls is a 100 percent turnout. Also, people who responded to this poll may be ineligible to vote, according to the new rules. I’d feel better if you could somehow eliminate from the poll those who also would be eliminated from voting. Plus the usual no-shows.

Republicans hear: “70 percent oppose your policy.”
Republicans reply: “Not under our new rules.”

The voting process has been so corrupted, beginning with the republicans’ first big power-grab having succeeded in returning a sick old man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease to office by pre-programming the voting machines. It was an unprecedentedly bold move and they didn’t get caught at it. The greed and power got busy behind the scenes and we have suffered ever since. I cannot believe even the under-educated in TEXAS would actually vote for gomert. Republicans were never adequate at governing – but they’re smart enough to know the changing demographics have rendered them to near Dodo bird status. Imagine this country truly becoming the nation we all knew it could be when we move to government that no longer rewards corporate graft and avarice. We’ll use the best ideas to put the fossil fuel industry out of the business of ruining life on our beautiful planet. Our universities will find a real “cancer cure”, so unethical drug companies can no longer use people as cash cows before they die (usually from the treatment). Wall Street and greedy corporations will again have a boss to answer to – us. ALEC will be laid to rest and Wal-Mart will stop being the primary cause of working people being forced to rely on SNAP.
With the way the GOP has fought against the Affordable Care Act, unscrupulously leveraged themselves able to impose restrictions on women’s reproductive rights, passed these restrictive “UN-AMERICAN” anti – voting measures etc., I could never trust this disgusting group of greed driven inhumane thugs ever again.

I’ve even seen polls showing the elderly are beginning to think twice about supporting the party that seeks to turn Medicare into a voucher system. All they’ve got left is the worst of capitalism behind them to pay for their sick and twisted ‘ propaganda messaging’. “You can’t fool all of the people all of the time”, and my money says these vicious – unprecedented attacks on voting – women – ACA, will only serve to hasten their journey to self extinction. Our advantage truly is their blind arrogance and big mouths that only serve to enhance our numbers. Have faith, their ‘house of cards’ was built from a foundation of prevarication. Depending on constant lies might give you ‘initial advantage’ but, at some point – as people begin to recall how the previous ‘scare bomb’ never detonated – the liar’s character and credibility are called into question. The tactics used to build them up – will be their downfall.

This is just a symptom of a voter gap. Too many of the people over 50 or so believe the “stuff” the Tea Party is spewing but they are clueless as to how their votes will hurt their children, grandchildren and those that come after them. It’s an “I have mine” closed minded mentality with no care about the future. And, the suppression of voters’ rights is a symptom of their ignorance. This is self-serving and very disagreeable; and a case can be made that it’s profoundly unethical and corrupt, and that by lying and subverting the Constitution at the behest of a self-installed group, they are harming the best interests of the great majority in a manner that could be considered criminal. When you have people in charge who match this kind of description and exhibit this behavior, if as a matter of law you can’t arrest them, you FIRE THEM. So if in the mid terms or 2016 North Carolina retains this cabal of slobs, it will join the other red states that have been hijacked in deserving its misery.

Were my business large enough to relocate elsewhere, I would think very carefully about relocating to NC and exposing my employees to abuse from these goons.

I think that the Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot, probably both feet and that is ok with me. The more they do which disenfranchises voters, the better chances the Democratic candidates have to win the coming elections. Yea Democrats!

Right now the Republican Party is dead on a National basis. I see no candidate amongst those who seem like they will be running for the GOP position who is likely to win in a Presidential race. I believe that even on a local and state level, the repugs are dead men walking. Their local wars on women, people of color, LGBT, and the elderly will affect far too many for them to overcome. Their policies may sound good to some people, until they are actually affected by them. They are just too eager to past laws and policies the hurt the majority of people.

Let’s face facts everyone – as long as the conservative voting block of the Southeast part of the US remains in the control of the loony-bin right-wing nuts and corporate big money influx, then anyone living in those states can expect more and more of this sort of political shenanigans to continue. It is up to the literate electorate of these states to retake control of their state houses and elect ‘educated’, ‘literate’, and enlightened people to office who will take the people’s will into account not the monetary handouts from big corporations and listening to the no-fact lunacy of the party at large.

Well things there are worse than this article. Why are they closing down voting sites on College campus and moving the polls far away ? Why are they eliminating pre-registration for 17 year old to vote? Why are they eliminating early voting? Is the reason to suppress voting or to prevent voting fraud? Everyone knows that young people vote democratic. So show me one provision of the new voting restrictions that make the members of the Republican base harder?

Who would think that you need to have proper ID to vote? After all, you don’t need to have ID to buy Booze or cigarettes, do you? You don’t need to have ID to cash a check, do you? You don’t need to have ID to drive a car, do you? You don’t need to have ID to get a book at the library, do you??

    You do? Oops! My bad.

Everything in this article is true. The GOP is running scared and they will DO anything to make sure that they do. Not to paint in broad strokes, the Republicans claim to be Christian and are a moral bunch. But they throw that right out the window when they are running scared. And the actions they are taking is racist in the purest form. They don’t give a flying rat’s rear end about the poor and hungry. I think every Republican should spend in a month in Compton California for one month, making minimum wage and can’t own a gun during that month. They are so out of touch with reality it is beyond imagination.

Actually it is your liberals who are out of touch. Despite all the rhetoric you spew the conservatives still make up a larger share of the country than you liberals, still are more charitable than you bigmouthed liberals who only believe in government “charity,” and still have more morals than you liberals. The only freedom you liberals believe in abortion and gay marriage. Outside of that you want the government controlling people like robots.

Compton and Detroit have been liberal controlled for decades and look where it has got them.

A one party state is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people?

No. I’m distinctly not in favor of one-party government. My posts all over state clearly that while I disagree with most Conservatives, and their viewpoints, I listen to them. And I believe that the right wing is necessary to keep a left-of-center government (please, please, PLEASE!) from going too far to the left.

Unfortunately, the current tactic of the GOP — in the absence of coherent, broad-support, ideas — is to cheat. Tell as many lies as they can get away with through Fox “News” and AM radio; instill as much fear as they can in the least educated of our population; and rig the ballot box as much as they can get away with, with the objective of limiting access from “likely-Democratic” voters.

Unfortunately both sides do it. The left likes to ignore it, but there is plenty of voter fraud on the left side as well. There were some Obama voters recently convicted in Ohio of voting more than 6 times. I could write a whole book on Democratic voter fraud. There is also many lies told in left wing media such as MSNBC and others.

Sorry, Mr. Johns. “Both sides do it.” Yes. Vote illegally. The numbers of voter fraud are consistently in the range less than 0.01%. That’s less than 1 vote in 10,000. Which has nothing to do with restricting access to the polls. In true GOP fashion, you’re changing the subject because the poll-rigging is uncomfortable to your position.
