How Peter Thiel’s Premier Data-Mining Firm Validated Clinton Global Initiative


On the final night of the Republican National Convention, Peter Thiel, one of the wealthiest men in Silicon Valley, will make his own very peculiar contribution to this bizarre spectacle. A gay libertarian who professes to abhor war, he will endorse the presidential candidacy of Donald J. Trump, the GOP’s war-mongering authoritarian nominee who chose a homophobic running mate.

Among his peers in the tech industry, who reportedly consider Thiel eccentric and mysterious as well as brilliant, few claim to understand why he has made a political choice that most of them consider mad and potentially dangerous. He is said to despise democracy, so perhaps he hopes to undermine our constitutional system.

But whatever Thiel’s motivation may be, he knows from personal experience that one of the principal lines of attack on Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, is false — because a premier technology firm that he founded and still chairs has vindicated the work of the Clinton Global Initiative.

In 2004, Thiel was one of the five co-founders of Palantir Technologies, an innovator in data analysis that has grown into one of the most respected and valuable corporations in its field, with such heavyweight clients as the Pentagon, the FBI, the NSA, and the CIA (indeed, the intelligence agency’s venture capital arm, In-Q-Tel, reportedly invested $2 million to start Palantir, and much of its success, ironically for the libertarian Thiel, has derived from its patronage by government). After several rounds of financing, Thiel remains the largest shareholder of the privately held Palantir, which was valued last year at $20 billion — making it the third most valuable tech startup in the U.S., behind Uber and AirBnB.

Ten years after its founding, Palantir’s chief executive Alex Karp — one of the firm’s co-founders with Thiel — agreed to perform a highly sophisticated and costly feat of data analysis for the Clinton Global Initiative, at no charge.

The task was to evaluate over 3,000 “commitments to action” made by nonprofits, corporations, unions, and other organizations at CGI’s annual meetings in New York City, hosted by its founder, former President Bill Clinton. Those commitments represent CGI’s central purpose, by transforming the typical conference on global problems, which usually began and ended with talk, into an opportunity for participants to act. To remain active in Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), every member must make a commitment, and those commitments must be “new, specific, and measurable” in their positive impact on a global problem.

Over the history of Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) since its founding conference in September 2005, the projects undertaken by its thousands of members are estimated to have improved the lives of more than 400 million people, at a cost of at least $85 billion, in areas ranging from education, job creation, and women’s empowerment to water, sanitation, and climate change. As CGI’s tenth anniversary approached in 2013, its leadership and management, including Bill and Chelsea Clinton, decided that rigorous evaluation of its commitments was overdue. Such analysis required the kind of software and analysis that Palantir routinely provides to its government and corporate clients.

Released in 2014, the Palantir report found that nearly 42 percent of all the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) commitments made between 2005 and 2013 had been completed successfully, while 40 percent were continuing to work toward their objectives. Only five percent were unsuccessful. Just under two percent were deemed to be stalled, while 11 percent were marked “unresponsive” for failing to report any progress for two years (and were removed from the list of active commitments). More than two-thirds of the successful commitments had exceeded their original goals.

The report went into far greater detail on a wide range of metrics and topics, and noted carefully that all the data on success and failure had been self-reported. The bottom line, however, as Forbes magazine columnist Tom Watson noted, was not only that CGI’s wide-ranging projects had achieved a far higher rate of success than most business startups — but that its candor about its failures promised to provide important lessons for the future of philanthropy.

As for Palantir, its decision to provide pro bono services was a strong indicator of its confidence in the reality of CGI’s own commitment to a better world — confidence that the firm’s tech wizards confirmed in 2013 with their own CGI commitment, an ambitious effort to improve global response to natural and other disasters by providing “software and analytical support to better mobilize responders and resources.”

So while Republicans may hurl myths, lies, and insults at the Clinton Foundation, during their convention and into the fall campaign, Peter Thiel’s own company crunched the data that proves them wrong.

Is that the vast majority of that money ISN’T GOING INTO THE POCKETS OF THE UPPER 1%!!! It’s being funneled into small projects around the world that by-in-large are benefiting not only the people that the CGI is trying to help: but it’s also going into the local establishments in these foreign countries that are helping these people enjoy better lives.

        And that too is one reason mentally deficient people like Ag and Otto and other right-wingers on the NM don’t like the Clinton Foundation – it’s helping the poor and middleclass rather than the already wealthy!! That really galls these dimwits!!!

            Exactly, and it’s even the right-wingers’ TAKE MENTALITY, that I think is behind the RIGHT-WINGERS’ refusal to get behind climate change. By admitting climate change exists, would force GOP politicians to create legislation that would be negative to the industries that are feeding dollars into their campaigns and probably their personal pockets as well: all the fossil fuel industry giants including coal and oil and even natural gas that are polluting our air, water and land and exacerbating global warming.

            And the kicker is, that even working to reduce climate change, would once again not be feeding monies into the industries today that are supporting the GOP – so of course, they have to deny climate change exists – so as, not to have to starting cutting the mouths of those dinosaur corporations that feed money to the GOP- all the big fossil fuel driven corporations in America.

            And with all I just said, I still can’t figure out how right-wingers can sleep at night: not only are they lying 24/7 by denying climate change – in the process they’re not only putting the entire world on the brink of total destruction – they’re putting their own future lives and those of their families and future descendants at risk as well.

            How do people who are working to destroy not only their families futures and lives, and those of everyone else trying to survive on the planet – just brush all that evil debauchery off and be able to get a good nights sleeping knowing full well just how outright evil they are being???

          It seems to me that the underlying motivation for conservatives (particularly the elite of the GOP) is a lack of long range foresight. They don’t seem to be able to see past their own immediate gratification, be it financial gain, political advancement or public adulation. They don’t appear to give a thought to the consequences of their actions in regards to the long term well-being of the country and by extension, their progeny as stated in the Preamble to the Constitution, to wit:

          We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

          Certainly the welfare of any particular group/party was not a consideration when those words were written.

    One difference between Trump and CGI is that Trump’s mistakes are characterized by him as BIG WINS!!! while CGI’s failures are openly admitted. And, as the article states, 82% of CGI’s commitments have either been completed successfully or are still working toward their objectives. Peter Thiel, who supports Trump, has validated CGI’s work, but that apparently doesn’t mean much to Hillary Clinton’s critics (read as haters), probably because they don’t believe in mathematics and statistical algorithms, two things that only elites believe in.

    No one is saying that the Clinton Foundation isn’t responsible for fine philanthropic work around the world. That they’ve found a way to be more efficient in this through innovative techniques and software, wonderful. That’s not the issue and never has been.

    The Clinton’s relatively recent accumulation of vast wealth after being “broke coming out of the White House” according to Hillary is really neither here nor there either. The vortex of wealth that Hillary and Bill have received from corporations, foundations, foreign organizations and others with an interest in U.S. public policy is not likely disinterested or impartial; but it’s simply part of a larger political system that rewards politicians for fealty and obedience. It’s commonly done and that’s up to the voters.

    The issue is the mixing of Clinton Foundation activities with her role as Secretary of State. We now know that Hillary lied about various aspects of this e-mail scandal and we also know that she lied to Obama about not taking any foreign government donations to the Foundation while in her role as SoS.

    Hillary Clinton’s private email server was housed at the same physical location and on the same network as an email server used and operated by the Clinton Foundation. Hillary’s server and the Foundation-run email server had exactly the same IP address, and the same SSL certificate. Numerous Clinton Foundation employees used the presidentclinton . com server for their own email addresses, which means that they were using email accounts that, if hacked, would have given any hacker complete access to Hillary Clinton’s State Department emails, as well. You would have to be pretty naive to not think that Clinton Foundation work wasn’t behind this.

    Whether it was poor judgement or arrogance or whatever, it is a shame because it’s not like things similar to this haven’t been done before. The W Bush White House shared an e-mail server with the RNC and Karl Rove made a lot of e-mails disappear himself. She may have accomplished some good charitable work in the blurring of the Clinton Foundation and her role as Secretary of State, but it wasn’t worth the potential compromising of the United States national security.

    This will continue to dog her and follow her through November and Democrats have a right to be angry with her judgement.

        It just depends. As a private citizen, there’s nothing wrong with accepting these donations.

        The problem is that there was a huge increase in arms sales to countries which had donated considerable sums to the Clinton Foundation, when she was SoS for example. There was a 143% increase in U.S. arms sales to countries that were Clinton Foundation donors, and the SoS is responsible for and oversees these arms sale approvals. There were other favours granted too.

        The State Department is also supposed to take foreign governments’ human rights records into account when reviewing arms deals. Hillary increased the number of approvals of those deals to Clinton Foundation donors that her own agency was criticizing for systematic human rights abuses.

        The optics were terrible.

          Yes, but those arms sales may well not have been a result of anything Hillary deliberately did: given the turmoil in the world, many nations have been seeking to further arm themselves.

          So all that may have happened was, when Hillary came to their country as part of her efforts to reestablish good relations with what had been our allies all along – she may have been asked to simply do what she could to expedite the processing of gun orders which countries had worked out with manufacturers in America, but which requires our State Department’s approval to complete the sales.

          So doing nothing in any way illegal, especially for a politician because that’s what all of them do if asked, she simply did what she could to ensure the State Department expedited a little the processing of the applications of gun sales for these countries. And if she did, these country’s simply made donations to the Clinton Foundation, which in no way benefits the Clinton’s directly, in appreciation for her help in expediting the foreign gun sale approval process.

          Years back I worked at Colts Firearms and we negotiated gun sales with foreign countries all the time. Colts only had to deal with the State Department in order to get final approval for a sale that had already been worked out. People trying to suggest that Hillary somehow got in the middle of this proces – are just like what they always do – just trying to create a suspicious situation and fake innuendo.

            She was warned. During Hillary’s 2009 Senate confirmation hearings, Richard Lugar urged the Clinton Foundation to forswear accepting contributions from governments abroad. “Foreign governments and entities may perceive the Clinton Foundation as a means to gain favor with the secretary of state,” he said. The Clintons didn’t take Lugar’s advice.

            Just before Hillary became Secretary of State, the Clinton Foundation signed an agreement generally obligating it to disclose to the State Department, increases in contributions from its existing foreign government donors and any new foreign government donors. Those increases were to be reviewed by an official at the State Department and, as appropriate, the White House counsel’s office. They ignored that too.

            Under Hillary, the State Department approved $165 billion worth of commercial arms sales to 20 nations whose governments have given money to the Clinton Foundation. That figure represented nearly double the value of American arms sales made to those same countries, and approved by the State Department, during the same period of the previous administration. There actually was a broad increase in American military exports that accompanied Obama’s arrival in the White House, but that 143% increase in sales to Clinton Foundation donor countries is significant because there was only an 80% increase in arms sales to all countries over the same time period.

            In all, governments and corporations involved in the arms deals approved by Hillary’s State Department delivered around $100 million dollars to the Clinton Foundation as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments to the Clinton family, according to Foundation and State Department records. American defense contractors also donated to the Clinton Foundation while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state and, in some cases,made personal payments to Bill Clinton for speaking engagements. So the Clintons did benefit directly.

            She did other things like switching from opposing an American free trade agreement with Colombia to suddenly supporting it after a Canadian energy and mining magnate, with interests in Columbia, contributed to the Clinton Foundation. This kind of thing was a regular occurrence with her.

            The State Department may not disclose which individual companies are involved in direct commercial sales, but its disclosure documents revealed that countries which donated to the Clinton Foundation saw a combined $75 billion increase in authorized commercial military sales under the three full fiscal years Hillary served, as compared to the first three full fiscal years of the previous administration.

            Bill Clinton’s speaking fee money also went through the roof during Hillary’s term as SoS. It wasn’t just the Foundation. Boeing was one of three companies that helped deliver money personally to Bill Clinton while benefiting from weapons authorizations issued by Hillary’s State Department. The others were Lockheed and Goldman Sachs.

            Stephen Walt, a Harvard University professor of international affairs, remarked that the intertwining financial relationships between the Clintons, defense contractors and foreign governments that sought weapons approvals was “a vivid example of a very big problem — the degree to which conflicts of interest have become endemic.”

            This wasn’t illegal because the Foundation is a philanthropic organization. The personal cash gifts, speaking fees, etc… are very difficult to prove under an obscure law that Gingrich once mentioned (can’t remember the name). That’s why there haven’t been any fake Congressional hearings yet although they often talk about it.

            The Republicans have long been out to get her with fake scandals…true, but at the same time Hillary Clinton also creates some of her own problems.

            Influenced by some money? Her record as SoS in regards to the Clinton Foundation and cash gifts/speaking fees is exhibit A.

            In 2001 Hillary voted to make it much more difficult for Americans to wipe out their debts through bankruptcy, as Elizabeth Warren is on record for chastising her for. Hillary has received millions from the financial sector in speaking fees and donations to her campaign and charitable foundation.

            Hillary appointed delegates to the DNC platform that she knew would defeat the Sanders inspired amendment that declared the Democrats to be in favour of Medicare-for-all universal healthcare. Her appointed delegates did exactly that. Hillary has also received millions from private health insurance companies and hopes to receive more yet I’m sure.

            Hillary is a cagey liar. There are lots of identifiable situations where it’s pretty damned easy to connect the dots, but impossible to “prove”. Don’t just take her word for it. Do you need somebody to hold your hand and guide you through it?

            Incidentally, Elizabeth Warren’s vicious criticism of Hillary in 2004 is why she’s not going to be VP, despite EW’s feeble attempt at HRC wardrobe approval. It will be a moderate to conservative Democrat.

            Oh well. What can you say? Still better than Trump although anybody would be.

      It is the issue. People care so little about actual philanthropic enterprise they let exploitation pass for it. Good works? They do NOTHING. They don’t even pay their interns.

        I am going to do more research into the Clinton Foundation at some point. They did get awfully rich in a heck of a hurry after leaving the White House “broke” according to Hillary. That coincided nicely with the birth of the Clinton foundation.

        I’m not entirely convinced that this staggering wealth accumulation all came from speaking fees, cash gifts, and book royalties. I’m just unsure, and I hear a lot of things.

        In the end, let’s face it, nobody NEEDS to do charity work that badly. You might take the chances that Hillary did as SOS for private gain, but for charity? It just looks odd.

    Thiel would never have admitted he was gay. He was outed, then did everything he could to penalize the publication who did it. A gay voting for Trump and the notoriously anti-gay Pence is analogous to poor people voting for Republicans even though the latter only look out for the interests of the rich.

    Did you even read the report? It’s nonsense. I pity the poor people who had to deal with it. But way more important that a gay guy is a libertarian, right? Clinton Global Initiative DOES NOTHING. It’s just a relatively affordable form of PR. Like what if the world Chamber of Commerce got together and patted themselves on the back while cheating all the idiots too poor, dumb and unconnected to be unable to attend.
