Sessions Likely To Put His Own Spin On ‘Justice For All’

Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III is one in a long line of reprehensible characters likely to inhabit the Trump White House. But if he is confirmed as the nation’s highest-ranking law enforcement officer, Sessions will be in a position to provoke extraordinary harm in the lives of ordinary Americans.

As U.S. attorney general, Sessions would run the Department of Justice; he’d have jurisdiction over its policing and prosecutions (the FBI is under Justice), as well as its enforcement of civil rights protections. Expect a Sessions-run department to play havoc with the very word “justice.”

Sessions, born in Selma, Alabama, in 1946 (yes, the Selma of Bloody Sunday), is one of those white Americans who never fully accommodated themselves to the changes wrought by the civil rights movement. His civil rights record is well known by those who work to remedy discrimination; that record helped to torpedo his 1986 nomination to a federal judgeship.

As a U.S. attorney in Alabama in the 1980s, he oversaw a weak case accusing civil rights activists of voter fraud — a prosecution the jury rejected in a mere three hours. Further, a black colleague testified that he had called the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People “un-American” and “communist-inspired.” And he had described the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as an “intrusive piece of legislation.”

Sessions’ retrograde positions on civil rights, though, didn’t stop his political rise. In fact, those positions likely accelerated his ascent in Alabama, where he was elected state attorney general before winning a seat in the U.S. Senate. It was from that post, to which he has been elected three times, that he became one of the first high-ranking politicians to cozy up to Donald Trump.

In the Senate, Sessions learned to publicly moderate his rhetoric and to take positions that made him seem less racist. Still, his bigotry came to the fore as he pushed legislation to oppress gays and immigrants. Not only did he vote against the bill that repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” — a bill that finally allowed gay sailors and soldiers to serve openly — but he also supported a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Never mind that such a bill would have contradicted the local control that conservatives claim to favor.

If his homophobia put him in close alliance with Vice President-elect Mike Pence, his views on immigration gave him common cause with Trump. Sessions has battled ferociously against every effort to enact comprehensive immigration reform over the last two decades. After the Senate passed an immigration reform proposal in 2013 over his objections, Sessions distributed a booklet to House Republicans to help them defeat the bill. It never passed Congress.

And let’s be clear about this: Sessions is skeptical toward even legal immigration. He introduced an amendment to the 2013 bill to curb legal admissions to the country, claiming that Silicon Valley executives have lied about a shortage of U.S.-born engineers and scientists. Mother Jones magazine quoted a Democratic staffer who said that Sessions and his aides “viewed this much more as a fight for the soul and identity of America as they knew it, rather than one of policy disagreements.” In other words, they were battling against the browning of America.

But those whites who find Sessions’ xenophobia comforting should beware: They might learn that he has some unpleasant surprises in store for some of them, too. As just one example, Sessions has exhibited outdated views on marijuana. While President Obama chose to look the other way as states began to legalize it, Sessions would probably start using federal law to prosecute users.

In a speech from the floor of the Senate earlier this year, Sessions said: “You can’t have the president of the United States of America talking about marijuana like it is no different than taking a drink. … It is different. … It is already causing a disturbance in the states that have made it legal.” He believes that “good people don’t smoke marijuana” and that it is “not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized.”

After several years of bipartisan agreement that the so-called war on drugs has run amok, Sessions seems poised to take us back to the era of “Reefer Madness.” That’s the justice of a zealot.

Sessions is the reincarnation of Jesse Helms but with a law degree.
Yes we are going to be in bad, bad times when we have a chief law officer who is an unrepentant white supremacist and nostalgic segregationist.
In other words he is a typical white Alabama Republican.
    The scum of America.

    1. mike December 30, 2016

      Such bull ????!
The Trump Derangement Syndrome has you by the balls.
You can make all the outrageous statements you want but it changes nothing. Trump will be President. Session’s will be AG and until you have proof what he will do, not what you irrationally think will happen, you can stick your head where the sun doesn’t shine.
Since the election you are all close to insanity.

      1. Elliot J. Stamler December 30, 2016

You may not be an Alabama White Republican but you are the same kind of scum they are, mike.

        1. mike December 30, 2016

Yep! The Trump Derangement Syndrome has your head about to explode. No loss to the world.
          Your insanity continues!

          1. angryspittle December 30, 2016

And when Trump shoves it up your ass with a red hot poker, like he already has has with his cabinet appointments, reneging on all of his promises (lies), you will not have the goddamn honesty or integrity to admit you got fucked.

          2. mike December 30, 2016

The hysteria and lack of reason abounds in you. You are in the middle stages of Trump Derangement Syndrome.

          3. angryspittle December 30, 2016

And you are in the advanced stages.

          4. mike December 30, 2016

Wrong again! Your constant hysteria, hyperbole and inability to distinguish fantasy from reality makes you a perfect Trump Derangement Syndrome candidate.

          5. angryspittle December 30, 2016

Talk to me in a year, if the world hasn’t imploded by then under the leadership of the vacuum headed moron.

          6. mike December 30, 2016

You definitely are consumed by TDS. How funny. Your head will explode long before mine.

          7. angryspittle December 30, 2016

Well if my utter disgust with a narcissistic fucking empty headed totally amoral ignoramus who has no knowledge of the goddamn world outside bilking business partners/acquainteneces/workers in his numerous scams that he has perpetrated, who owes more allegiance to Russian oligarchs than our own constitution, his tendency to kick down and kiss up and dominate in any situation, well than I guess you’ll have millions of people to despise and belittle as suffering from TDS.

          8. mike December 30, 2016

You really are having a hissy fit. You didn’t get your elitist way this election and the illusion of these last 7 years has turned your whims into a pile of crap.
Under all your outraged rhetoric is a narcissistic sense of entitlement. One of Frustration which brings on the tantrums. Trump Derangement Syndrome is the tantrum that happens when that sense of entitlement bursts. What you really want is to get rid of democracy and replace it with a dictatorship. Trump Derangement Syndrome is the tantrum of tyrants.

Obama maintained the illusion that the opposition didn’t matter by ruling unilaterally. Then in one election the illusion collapsed. The left wasn’t really in charge. There were millions of people across the country in places they had never visited or even heard of who got to decide on all these issues.

You and your ilk are the real threat to democracy. But that’s what the left has always been.

The hysteria of Trump Derangement Syndrome is the flip side of Obama worship. Both reject democracy and embrace power. You are the illiberal attitudes of a totalitarian movement at odds with America.
Your ramblings just make you more irrelevant.

          9. angryspittle December 30, 2016

Trump middle fingers the alt-right. They don’t like it.

You know, it’s kind of funny. Usually when a politician wins a race, the first thing he does is to try to consolidate his base, maximize his support and clout. Trump appears to doing everything in his power to dismantle the coalition that propelled him to the White House.

First Trump came right out and said in one of his recent “Thank You” rallies and told his audience could get lost now. He told thousands of his devoted supporters directly to their face, “I don’t need your vote anymore. In four years I might need it again, but I don’t need it anymore now”. For some reason this didn’t get the coverage it should have, although MSNBC caught it and gave it circulation, including a 9 minute segment on “The Last Word”.

            But that’s one thing about the Orange Julius, when he’s serious about something, like getting rid of the chaff, he goes in whole hog. A few days ago he tweeted out holiday greetings, including;

The rabid supporters on the alt-right are not taking this
            laying down. And they immediately took to Twitter to express their displeasure to him in a context he fully understands. This one pretty well sums it up;

Donald Trump’s Many Business Failures, Explained

      2. FireBaron December 30, 2016

Mike, this phrase you keep using, I do not think you understand what it really means.
How, oh please explain, is this apparent “Trump Derangement Syndrome” any different than the “Obama Derangement Syndrome” first demonstrated by Sarah Palin (oooh, I actually used her name instead of referring to one of her failed titles) and repeated by numerous others over the past eight years? At least no one expressing dismay over our current President Elect has ordered him to stay out of “our states, or else”.

        1. mike December 30, 2016

No, I have a far better grasp of the meaning. Your side is in full meltdown over this election. So let me help you. First signs of the TDS is the complete lack of reality, from tweets to a call from Taiwan that the “one China policy was no more.” You(left) president-elect’s critics misunderstand our policy. “One China” means that we don’t recognize Taiwan as a sovereign country or China’s sovereignty over Taiwan.
Those suffers who have TDS speak solely of hyperbole. From creating some form of the brownshirts/Hitler to Trump operating outside the bounds of law and ethical standards, doing extralegal acts of force. These illogical leaps are pure hysteria. Those who are afflicted with TDS can’t separate fantasy from reality. Opinion becomes fact. How about those who want violence against a democratically elected Trump. In the eyes of those with TDS, Trump is the accumulation of the worst tyrants in history, past and present and yet he is only the president-elect.
Since Hillary lost, the Electoral College is, according to Slate, an “Instrument of White Supremacy—and Sexism”. And probably Islamophobic and Homophobic too.
TDS is alive and well on the left. Your narcissistic sense of entitlement was burst this election so the frustration and tantrums.
“The hysteria of Trump Derangement Syndrome is the flip side of Obama worship. Both reject democracy and embrace power. They are the illiberal attitudes of a totalitarian movement at odds with America.”

          1. dtgraham December 30, 2016

Yeah, and Obama is a Kenyan, radical Muslim, Communist who took away everyone’s guns and brought in official Sharia law while implementing East German Marxism and the war on Xmas.

The difference is that ODS was based on nothing while TDS is based on the hundreds of bizarre, disgusting, asinine, and dangerous things the man has said and done over the years (including the last 1 1/2)…and then projecting on what’s to come. There’s your difference.

FireBaron left out that Trump has now been proven to be a fraud artist and con-man in a court of law, after the Trump University settlement.

          2. mike January 1, 2017

On 1/20/17 Trump will be the President of the United States of America for the next 1460 plus days. Get over it. The democratic establishment made up of small minded, brain dead, dead weight leaders destroyed your party not Trump. Trump is the result not the cause you got clobbered in the election.
He will be nominating conservative judges, repealing obama’s failed healthcare, removing his regulations, obama’s failed foreign affairs policies will be fixed.
You and your ilk on NM Continuing your shrill and asinine posts only makes you all look less credible.
Trump is here to stay. Direction of country has become less negative, country more hopeful, even Trump approval rating is 51%.

          3. dtgraham January 2, 2017

If Trump and the GOP House do exactly what they want, that will be the end for them. Think health care for starters.

It may even be enough to motivate mid-term voters to show up in the kind of numbers that will finally overwhelm the gerrymander next year, and allow the Dems to recapture the House by a very slim margin. Maybe. It’s a daunting task because of how Congress and many state legislatures were rigged after 2010. The REDMAP had nothing to do with the GOP wave of 2010, but every election since has been entirely at it’s mercy.

Wisconsin was one of five states where the Democrats won more than half of the votes for the assembly but got fewer than half of the seats. Largely because of redistricting, Republicans in Wisconsin received just 49 percent of the 2.9 million votes cast in the state’s congressional races in 2012 but won five out of eight seats or 62.5 percent. A consistent majority of the popular vote has so far netted the Dems 39 out of 99 legislative seats in Wisconsin for example. In 2012, the Dems received 1.4 million more votes than Republicans for federal Congress, but were barely able to budge the needle on GOP control of the House.

Still, the Dems won the 2006 mid terms by a national margin of victory of 7.9% (I believe). That would be enough to do it if the vote was even roughly evenly distributed. Might be enough anyway.

          4. mike January 2, 2017

You assume too much! You assume Trump in two short years won’t be helping the people. That’s why he won. Do you really think with the ego he has he will fail. Come on! He has congress and will do whatever it takes get the economy going and people back to work. It’s Trump and republicans who will be well positioned for 2018. The Democratic Party has no leader. Obama tried and he couldn’t rally his base.

          5. PrecipitousDrop January 3, 2017

It doesn’t matter how much Trump “helps people”.

Yes, it’s like the “Obama madness” you guys got, but with far more justification, and far less likely to damage the nation.
Speaking of insanity and irrationality, you should think about the fact that those are far better descriptions of the GOP for the last few decades than of the Democrats worried about a Fascist-leaning sociopath and his racist and science-denying appointees.

        1. mike December 31, 2016

Not even close to your so-called obama madness. Your side is totally irrational, opinion becomes fact, you have no sense proportion, can’t distinguish between fantasy and reality, assume no difference president-elect rhetoric and his proposed policies, tried to change election outcome, death threats, etc.
You lost get over it. Your party has been run by a generation of establishment small minded leaders who are nothing more than dead weight.

          1. dtgraham December 31, 2016

Here’s Trump on what everybody around the world (including all intelligence agencies) agrees was the obvious Putin killing of former FSB agent Alexander Litvinenko, using the nuclear poison Polonium 210:

“Have they found him (Mr Putin) guilty? I don’t think they’ve found him guilty. If he did it, fine but I don’t know that he did it.”

“You know, people are saying they think it was him, it might have been him, it could have been him. But in all fairness to Putin – and I’m not saying this because he says ‘Trump is brilliant and leading everybody’ – the fact is that he (Putin) hasn’t been convicted of anything. Some people say he absolutely didn’t do it.”

“First of all, he says he didn’t do it. Many people say it wasn’t him. So who knows who did it?”

mike, that is really f*cked up. He makes idiot savants look like masters of word-smithing.

At least the submissive to Donald, eager to please, little fat boy Chris Christie is happy.

          2. mike December 31, 2016

TDS really has you by the balls.
Even the British judge in his 300+ Page report said “it was likely state sponsored.”
Trump at that time was a private citizen not having access to intelligence agencies information. I suspect when it happened, in another country no less, he paid little attention to it.
What trivia and a waste of time.
As I have said before you TDS people are looking for anything and everything to attack Trump.
            He isn’t even president.
Get over it, he beat an old worn out hag and a party that had lost all contact with its base. The left paid dearly and will pay the price for generations. The social-warrior party is dead and has no leader. You lost the House, Senate, WH, Governorships, 1000 seats in state legislatures in 6 short years and all you have to be angry at is Trump. Now that’s funny.
For the record. Trump will get his act together on Putin. Am I overly concerned at this point? No! We will all be watching.
Talk about a real loser. Obama is eating his 2012 words on Russia. Sure looks like he blew it again. Tells Putin to knock it off 18 months ago but Putin blows him off. Obama is a laugh. Obama is and has been a disaster when it comes to foreign policy.

          3. Sand_Cat December 31, 2016

Even more delusional than I thought. Your denial is meaningless: the last few decades, and especially the last eight years, speak louder and more truthfully than your protests, obfuscations, and attempted trivialization of legitimate concerns. The GOP has been on a racist orgy of irrationality since the legitimate election of the first African-American president, and the irate denials I know you will write don’t change that, either.
Speaking of small-minded dead weight, I doubt you could name more than one or two GOP leaders who don’t fit your projection far better than ANY Democrat. And the Democrats are not “my party”; it’s the lunatics, bigots, and combinations of both with a hefty dose of malice and self-righteousness that the GOP keeps putting forward that drive rational people to the Dems, the current president-elect, who won only through the mechanism put in place to protect slavery and plutocracy being the most outstanding example, though not the scariest. You guys all love the electoral college because both of your last two presidents were protected from the will of the people by it. And you’re clearly blind and deaf if you truly don’t understand the concern of rational people about the election of a willfully-ignorant, self-worshipping sociopath as leader of the nation and the so-called “free world.”

            Another of your laughable posts.
You keep that hysteria and outrage going your racist head is going to explode.
You think your a “rational” person, how funny.
I nailed the sorry state of Democratic Party leadership, Small minded, brain dead and dead weight to their members.
Your diarrhea of the brain continues.
EC is not going away, so get over it. Hillary knew everything hinged on the EC, but did nothing. Should Trump get economy growing faster and better you can kiss those Dems coming back to DP.
Can’t wait for your next tantrum. You have a really bad case Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Happy New Year my confused and irrational friend.

Why can’t the Tiny-Japanese-Man-In-A-Lizard-Suit stay on topic?
Does he have a freakishly tiny brain, too?

      Let’s see:

      1) NOT ONE of the emails Hillary handled on her personal server set up was correctly marked as being any confidential status (two of all the emails she saw having a little ‘c’ does not constitute being correctly marked as Confidential).

      2) No previous Secretary of State had ever NOT USED a private server for their emails: both Condi Rice and Colin Powell used the RNC’s private servers for more than 85% of their work while in office – with them clearly having handled many correctly marked classified emails!!

      3) Unlike Hillary, BOTH Rice and Powell ILLEGALLY erased hundreds of thousands of emails from their computers and the email servers they used when leaving office – a clear violation of the law – which not one conservative politician every questioned.

      4) Hillary’s missing emails have been estimated in be in the 10s of thousands, while at one point, there were 103 million emails missing from THE PRIVATE RNC SERVERS used by 22 members of the Bush Administration including GWB himself, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Condi Rice, Colin Powell and numerous others. To date, only 22 million of those 103 million emails have been recovered. And given that Karl Rove USED A PRIVATE RNC SERVER for 100% of his work during his White House years – it’s obvious Karl Rove did far worse than Hillary Clinton ever did in handling probably thousands of classified emails on a private server.

      5) It was actually Colin Powell who convinced Hillary Clinton to set up her private email servers JUST AS HE HAD DONE WHILE HE WAS SECRETARY OF STATE!!

      6) Hillary Clinton’s private email server was never hacked while she used it while the State Department’s email servers were hacked numerous times while she was Secretary of State. Government email servers ARE NO MORE SECURE than private email servers which are operated by a reputable private firm such as the one Hillary used. So this whole email fiasco is nothing
      but one more CONSERVATIVE SCAM!!!

So given all the above, you’re posting proves only how big of an idiot you really are!!!!!!!
