There’s Nothing American About Islamophobia

Share

Last week, President Barack Obama made his first visit to a mosque in the United States, staging a high-profile show of support for a religious minority under siege.

In communities across the country, mosques have been vandalized, Muslims have been harassed and political leaders have questioned their patriotism. Hate crimes against Muslim Americans have tripled since the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, according to The New York Times.

The proximate cause of this eruption of bigotry is a fear of terrorism associated with Islamic fundamentalists. But the deeper truth is that a substantial portion of the electorate is in the grip of a hateful jingoism, amplified by economic anxiety but rooted in the nation’s growing diversity.

Indeed, one of the defining features of the current Republican primary campaign is its ugly, out-front Islamophobia, led by Donald Trump. He has gone so far as to vow that Muslims would be barred from the country if he were to be (heaven help us) elected president.

Neurosurgeon Ben Carson has said that no Muslim should serve in the Oval Office. Other GOP candidates have engaged in their own Islamophobia-lite; for example, several have insisted that the U.S. admit no more Syrian refugees.

It was high time, then, for Obama to orchestrate an event in which he reminded Americans of our history, our values, our heritage. He did so last Wednesday in a passionate speech to the Islamic Society of Baltimore.

“Let me say as clearly as I can as president of the United States: You fit right here. You’re right where you belong. You’re part of America too. You’re not Muslim or American. You’re Muslim and American,” he said.

It’s about time.

Earlier in his presidency, Obama had been reluctant to publicly embrace the country’s Muslim population; he was afraid of fueling the ridiculous falsehoods about his own ancestry and religion. According to a CNN/ORC poll conducted in September 2015, 29 percent of Americans — and 43 percent of Republicans — believe he is a Muslim. Fifty-four percent of Trump supporters think so.

He is not. Obama is a Christian. (You will surely remember the controversy that erupted during his first presidential campaign over his then-pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who was ordained in the United Church of Christ. Many of the same voters who vociferously criticized Obama over his association with Wright back then now insist, oddly, that he’s a Muslim.)

The fabrications and conspiracies notwithstanding, the final year of his presidency has brought Obama a freedom from political caution. Moreover, he may have finally understood that he cannot persuade his vehement right-wing critics to be rational. They will always oppose him, doubt him, mistrust him.

To underscore that, GOP presidential candidates Donald Trump and Marco Rubio jumped immediately to criticize Obama’s appearance at the mosque. Trump coyly fanned the flames of birtherism, while Rubio insisted that Obama is “always pitting people against each other.” (Huh?)

Here’s the more important point, though: There would be absolutely nothing un-American or foreign or subversive if Obama were Muslim. This is a nation that has religious pluralism in its DNA. While the Tea Partiers who so frequently quote the U.S. Constitution are curiously quiet on this precept, the founding document explicitly states that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office… under the United States.”

In 1797, the U.S. Senate unanimously ratified the Treaty of Tripoli, which says, among other things, that “the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.” As Obama noted in his speech, Thomas Jefferson — calling Muslims “Mahometans,” as they were frequently referred to in his day — wrote that his Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was meant to protect “the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and the Mahometan.”

Those who pledge to protect our nation and preserve its values ought to take that more seriously.

Have you ever wondered just what kind of country it would be, if everything the Right Wingers say they would like to happen, did? If for example the Left, due to it’s programs, policies, and platform, were to be declared illegitimate, as a fair number of extremists who now speak for the Right, have recently suggested. And there was only one party?
What would everyday life for the average American be like in a country run by an army of those very pure ideologues called, “true Conservatives?” First, it would probably depend a lot on which State you found yourself in. With the constrained limits the Right believes The Constitution places on the Federal Gov. A State, according to many RW adherents, may be a totally separate entity unto itself. It may regulate, tax, form it’s own militias, set up it’s own justice, and electoral system, appoint it’s own High Court, that would hand down the law within the State’s jurisdiction, irrespective of the Federal Bench, and those, “nine unelected, black robed, lawyers,”on The Supreme Court. That so often in their view, “ignore the will of the People.” Former 3 term Governor of Texas, Rick Perry opined as how a State would be well within it’s Rights to declare itself Christian, and base it’s laws upon the tenets found within the Bible. Yes, absolutely he said. That’s the way the Founders set it up originally. But probably the most inglorious thing envisioned by these
so called, freedom seekers about keeping a ham handed, evil Federal Gov. out of a State’s affairs. Would be a State’s nearly unfettered ability to freely compete against all the other States for the business of the corporate shopper looking for the best deal available. The least interference from gov. the lightest regulatory oversight, the lowest possible tax rate, a labor union ban, and of course the most generous incentive packages they could find. Land, covered infrastructure costs, cash, or whatever might be required to sweeten the deal. This is the scenario of what the RW envisions as the perfect formula for creating a booming true Capitalists economy. Where the individual within a free market, is free to seek his, or her fortunes, succeed or fail. And there is never a need for gov. to be involved in most of the things it’s involved in now. Healthcare, housing, maintaining a social safety net, or being concerned about education, the environment, banks, or the economy. And the once ballooning public debt crushing our nation would disappear. As a rising tide of unprecedented wealth, jobs, and economic expansion would eventually lift all boats to unbelievable heights! And also, create a land where man could be a man, worship his God, be free to protect his home, wear his gun on the outside, never have to share his country with foreigners, or any kind of interloper he didn’t like, Or, with the Democrats, and their political correctness gone, ever worry again about the gov. taking his God given Rights!

Fortunately, there are still enough sane people in the USA to make sure that does not happen.

If you don’t like government control, why are you supporting a political party that wants to expand government control of our lives exponentially??

Republicans want government to be able to tell the American people:

How they can worship (which religion they should belong to).

Who they can marry or sleep with.

That Americans cannot use virtually any birth control methods aside from abstinance.

That if they’re poor or disadvantaged they can’t vote (it’s not liberals that are putting roadblocks up to voting).

That they shouldn’t have a right to make their own reproductive decisions

And I’m sure there are a number of more issues that the GOP is pushing for that essentially are expanding government’s control over the lives of Americans.

Oh! And I forgot, if you don’t like bigger government, then don’t vote for a Republican: Reagan added over 280,000 to our federal government in his 8 years. Together Reagan and the 2 Bushes added over 330,000; fortunately during Clinton’s administration it came down over 380,000 such that today, our government is 330,000 workers smaller than when Reagan left office in 1989.

And during Bush 2’s 2 terms, all government offices combined – state, local and federal increased by over 950,000 workers – while those have shrunk under Obama by over 700,000.

When we think about Fascism, we forget that some of the richest, and most powerful people in this country, thought Adolf Hitler was doing a great job. And many also agreed with his rampant anti-semitism. It’s interesting to read the glowing correspondence Hitler received from our own Henry Ford over the years as the Nazi Party rose to prominence. There was a huge picture of Ford that hung behind Hitler’s desk when he served briefly as Germany’s Chancellor. I don’t believe today’s Oligarchs, and Plutocrats, fell too very far from the trees in their overall philosophy, than those of the 20s, and 30s. They just don’t goose-step

Well, we can already see what Republicans, trying to turn their states into self-serving egotistical non-paradises has accomplished: that vast majority of GOP-governed states are already looking more and more like 3rd world nations. As survey groups like 24/7 Wall Street and others do surveys of the citizens on these rogue states, they’re finding that:
27 of the 31 states where people today are most broke and on the verge of bankruptcy are GOP-run.
That all 10 of the states where people say they are the most miserable are GOP-run.
That all 10 of the states where the surveyors have judged people are living with the worst quality of life are GOP-run.
That 24 of the 27 states which have BY FAR the highest auto accident rates – many of them well above the national average fatalities per million miles traveled are GOP-run.
That 13 of the 15 states with the highest infant and maternal mortality are GOP-ruin.
And I could go on and on. But what all the surveys basically say, Is that GOP (conservative) governance is a DISASTER!!

Meaning had no Democrats taken over in the past 85 years, that people saving for retirement would have less money today than they invested 85 years ago??

Isn’t it bad enough that one GOP president named Nixon was a total crook, and another was so hellbent on reaping a fortune that he not only allowed the worst terrorist attack to hit America which killed almost 3,000 people; and as if that wasn’t bad enough he had the gall to started an unwarranted war that ended up killing over 4,000 American soldiers and maiming tens of thousands more; while all the while running up trillions in debts??

Isn’t it bad enough that a supposed business expert was so clueless that he refused to apply a stimulus to our economy during a time of recession – and sat back so long refusing to help that America and the world fell into what was called the Big Depression – which required a Democrat more than 12 years to dig America out of??

You got it lowlife!! Bush stacked the deck against Obama by signing tons of unfunded legislation that would rack up deficits for years to come!!

And here’s a little tidbit on your BS about Democrats are nothing but tax and spend:

Reagan raised taxes 11 times; Obama never.

Obama has consistently cut taxes, not raised them, Obama, In fact, wound up being the largest tax-cutter in presidential history cutting $654 billion in 2011 and 2012 alone. He was in favor of letting the Bush tax cuts EXPIRE for the super wealthy, (which no, is not the same as a tax hike), but even that didn’t come to pass. Romney in 2012 even admitted Obama didn’t raise taxes.

While Reagan, got through a big tax cut once he took office which greatly favored him and his rich buddies; but conservatives like you seem to like to forget that he raised taxes 11 times in: 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987 and 4 of those were massive tax increases (especially on the middle class). .

Talk about not being able to do math – through Bush’s last budget the debt was 12T; it’ now 19T- that’s an increase of 7T not 9T – you obviously can’t even subtract. And Bush inherited a surplus budget and then spent like a drunken sailor witn more than 8% annual spending increases during his entire two terms. Whereas, Obama inherited the worst economy since the Big Depression, a budget with 1.4T of deficit spending and America on the verge of depression. Not to mention a ton of unfunded legislation Bush signed that was adding 100s of billions in deficit spending from the gitgo and still is!!!!!!!!!

Oh! and Obama has presided over the smallest annual spending increases of any president in the past 40 years at around 1.2%/yr increases – none of the last 3 GOP presidents has kept average annual spending increases under 5% .

You’re right that God didn’t make a specific commandment about not lying. But this verse from Revelations 21 makes it clear that he takes a very dim view of liars considering he puts them in the same company with murderers, idolators and others:

            Revelation 21:8

“But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

You need to check your debt #’s. On 1/20/2009 the national debt was 10.63 trillion not 7 trillion. The last # l saw was 18.8 trillion. As for increasing the debt the conservative savior Reagan increased the debt by 188% during his 8 years in office. GW Bush increased it by almost 90% for his 8 years. Under President Obama it has increased 78%, that is less than both of these Consevative presidents. The national debt has increased every year since 1980 except for the last year of President Clinton.

It’s the same old plea we hear over and over, wake up Liberal, your economics is bankrupting the country! Well, here’s some reality. The reality is, blue states subsidize red ones. In other words, blue States, with their union shops, and pre k programs, and well funded public services, and modern public schools, send more in to the Federal system in the form of taxes, than they receive back in the form of Federal assistance. For red states, the opposite is the case. Look it up. Take bright red MS. with it’s unstoppable GOP legislative majorities, a GOP Governor on board to sign their bills into law. Meaning they run the state top to bottom, in any way they damn well please. But, it is an unfortunate fact for so many Mississippians, their state holds the perennial top spot as the largest receiver of Federal dollars in the nation. With it’s high numbers of impoverished, uninsured, and unskilled minimum pay workers, it’s a literal retail corporate cornucopia. Or so one would think. However, it’s poorly funded public schools, sky high college tuition rates, creating the largest socio-economic gap between the few well to do, and the majority working poor, MS. receives four dollars, and fifty cents back from the Federal Gov. for every dollar it manages to contribute to the country. Which makes MS exhibit numero uno, and par for the course for red states in general. And says a lot about the supposed success, or the lack thereof, of trickle down, supply side economics for fat cats. Complete with pretty fairy tales that call for ever larger tax cuts coming out of the pockets of the have littles, flowing in to the overflowing bank accounts of the wealthy, and politically connected. Minimum regulations all around of course, Right to work laws in full force, along with the constant budget shortfalls, leading inevitably to more of the same. More cuts in public funding, leading to conditions for the average citizen that make a mockery of the concept of a government working in good faith for the common good. So, I’m very awake, and glad to share a little reality with you. You’re welcome…

Yes, sadly, Idaho leads the list of states where it’s hardest to earn a living wage.

See this list from CBS News:

All 15 States where it’s the hardest to earn a living are GOP-run states or considered Red States per CBS News

ID, MS, AR, MT, UT, NM, SC, WV,AL, AZ, KY, FL, GA, NV, IN

(Note that NM may often vote Blue but it’s been run by the GOP for more than 8 years.)

More of your absolute lies!! Obama followed through on what Bush started – reinforcing our southern border, and there are actually far fewer illegals coming across the southern border today than at any time in the past 2-3 decades. And you have absolutely NO EVIDENCE that immigrants are more unlawful than native-born Americans because, in fact, they are 8-10 times less likely to commit a crime than someone born here in America. Which is one of the big reasons that crime across the nation is actually lower today than it was 20 years ago!!!!! As the percent of Hispanics in our population has increased!

Divide and conquer? There are a lot of us that see that as part of the overall strategy. But, the more obvious thing about States, and State Governments, is they are a lot easier to buy out, and influence, than the Federal, that must answer to a wider population, and is often much more closely watched by a lot more people. The fact that in 2010 the Right concentrated on taking back the House and putting enormous sums of money in smaller State, and Gubernatorial elections. Then, with that win accomplished in a census year, was able to severely gerrymander hundreds of districts in their favor in large segments of the country. And no one I ever spoke to, nothing I read in the press, not even the DNC, that I heard, ever mentioned this as a possibility, if the Left skipped the mid-term as they are known to do. And most everything politically out of whack, and dysfunctional on both the Left, and Right, has flowed from that one disastrous 2010 mid term. Obama defending, stopping the extremists. Republicans obstructing everything, promising to tear it all down at all costs, and failing. The hard core base they created with the gerrymandering, winding up despising every last one of them for what they see as lying to them. and helping Obama to succeed. It’s not nice to try and fool Mother Democracy.

Compared to Mississippi, Wisconsin, Kansas all “laboratories” for far right wing ideology with actual enacted policies in those states with the glaring result of these red states all failing miserably, destroying their schools, their tax base, oppressing their constituents, and with Michigan actually poisoning their people with lead tainted toxic water, and their anti-democratic “emergency city managers” hand picked by their dictatorial governor Snyder! There is absolutely no question on failing far right policies compared to well run, liberal states whose population is consider an asset and not the burden that populations in these red states are for dishonest and detached politicians to bother with……..

When our Government started out, there were those who wanted stronger states rights and those who wanted a stronger federal government. We need only to look at those abuses by states to see that stronger states rights is a bad idea. Ie., jim crow laws, refusing to expand medicaid, black killings by police, and a governor who makes it a state law to remove elected officials , if he so desires, and put his own people in city governments. Leaded water, anyone?

Charleo unfortunately, the state of Texas is the best example of what America would look like: arguably the worst state in America when compared to all the others. Given that in that comparison, Texas ends up within the worst 10 states in the nation in everyone of 23 subjective socio-economic comparisons: comparisons such as – quality of the fire and police protection given to its citizens, quality of its roads and infrastructure, the percent of people living in poverty, the percent of its people that have a college degree, the percent of its government people convicted of crimes; the amount of taxpayer dollars spent on education; the percent of its citizens who graduate from high school and on and on.

Unfortunately, our history is not exactly a shining example of what our Democracy is supposed to stand for. The former British Colonists who suddenly found themselves as Americans had problems with other non-British colonists who also settled here, Swedes, Dutch and Germans who were here before 1775. They were all treated with disdain by the Anglo majority. Treatment of Native Americans, Blacks (whether slave or free), and Irish immigrants was even worse.

Who cares about the difference in the percentage of hate crimes between Jews and Muslims when today, it’s the radicalized Muslim’s that are creating hate crimes that kill numerous innocent people at a time?????

Anti-Semitism hate crimes haves been going on for centuries. But when’s the last time a hate crime against Jews has ended up killing more than 1/2 a dozen people?? Or sparking fear in the lives of everyday Americans?? When’s the last time a group of Jews ended up flying airplanes into a skyscraper??

Since you can’t read a whole report I have copied FBI report for you.

            Religious bias

Of the 1,140 victims of anti-religious hate crimes:

56.8 percent were victims of crimes motivated by their offenders’ anti-Jewish bias.

16.1 percent were victims of anti-Islamic (Muslim) bias.

6.2 percent were victims of bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).

6.1 percent were victims of anti-Catholic bias.

2.5 percent were victims of anti-Protestant bias.

1.2 percent were victims of anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.

11.0 percent were victims of bias against other religions (anti-other religion). (Based on Table 1.)
