FBI Source: Trump Asked Comey To End Investigation Of Michael Flynn

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump asked then-FBI Director James Comey to end the agency’s investigation into ties between former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn and Russia, according to a source who has seen a memo written by Comey.

The explosive new development on Tuesday followed a week of tumult at the White House after Trump fired Comey and then discussed sensitive national security information about Islamic State with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The Comey memo, first reported by the New York Times, is likely to raise questions about whether Trump tried to interfere with a federal investigation.

Comey wrote the memo after he met in the Oval Office with Trump, the day after the president fired Flynn on February 14 for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the extent of his conversations last year with Russia’s ambassador, Sergei Kislyak.

“I hope you can let this go,” Trump told Comey, according to a source familiar with the contents of the memo.

The New York Times said that during the Oval Office meeting, Trump condemned a series of government leaks to the news media and said the FBI director should consider prosecuting reporters for publishing classified information.

The White House denied the report in a statement, saying it was “not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Mr. Comey.”

Flynn’s resignation came hours after it was reported that the Justice Department had warned the White House weeks earlier that Flynn could be vulnerable to blackmail for contacts with Kislyak before Trump took office on January 20.

Kislyak was with Lavrov at the White House last week when Trump disclosed the sensitive information.

A spokeswoman for the FBI declined to comment on the details of the memo.

The new development came as Republican and Democratic lawmakers pressured Trump to give a fuller explanation for why he revealed sensitive intelligence information to Lavrov.

The information had been supplied by a U.S. ally in the fight against the Islamic State militant group, the officials said.

If Congress stays objective about all this and not be swayed in the least by partisan politics–the bane of modern-day America and the rest of the world—then this will be the rope we’ve been expecting Trump would fashion, by virtue of his bloated ego, to hang himself with.
As soon as Trump is shown the Exit Door, the nation will be able to breathe a HUUUGE sigh of relief.

Trump and the GOP have been one big existential nightmare, and as soon as Trump is unceremoniously booted out, the nation will be able to forge ahead more rapidly towards fulfilling its destiny, as presaged by Baha’u’llah, and elaborated on in finer detail by both Abdu’l Baha and Shoghi Effendi.

        Disagree.

The Trump Circus is one of the best things that has happened to the USA.

Trump, and his antics, are confounding his defenders. He is focusing attention on the fallacies of Republican doctrine. He is not only incapable of leading the Republicans in furtherance of their doctrine; he actively is hindering the Congress’ pursuit.

As was said of President J Q Adams, ” May he confound his enemies, as he has his friends.”

Trump is a walking ad for Democratic office seekers.

Pence would be much less confrontational, amusing, incompetent, incoherent, and unsuccessful in promoting the Republican agenda.

Just one example: Trump’s tweets about the Muslim Ban are key evidence of his intent to discriminate by religion. Without them, the Ban might have been upheld.

I can’t debate your point because there’s definitely two ways to predict the outcome. I just worry about the lasting damage that could be done if a mentally unstable person holds that position to long. Not to mention if something serious happens with him in charge, or he causes it to happen

Remember this is a very active President. No surrogate or Congressperson can be expected to know what the official line will be before Trump tweets it.

I suspect Fox & Friends will announce the line this morning. Right now it’s just deny it happened. Who ya gonna believe Comey or Donald J Trump?

Willing to put money that Aaron will be disappointed and Republicans will stifle any attempts to investigate and act.

I had to do that once with a VP I worked for. I told the business owner to fire me if I was wrong and handed him the accounting books that showed how Mr. VP of the Universe was bilking the company.

Mr. VP was gone that afternoon. I remained for another 20 plus years. Sometimes, you have to stand firm on the courage of your convictions.

The White House already is in full deny mode—Sean and McMaster are still allowing themselves to be cannon fodder for Trump, even though it’s ruining their reputations. Trump’s credibility is zilch, and he’s too impatient and proud to calm down or listen to advice unless it agrees with Trump’s preconceived half-baked notions.
At this stage, it should be obvious to his most loyal supporters that Trump is an ever-present risk because he can’t control his emotions or use what little rational faculties remain.

Trump also uses people with top expertise and as soon as he realizes they are smarter than him, he gets rid of them, ergo his firing of the only 3 top experts involved in the Russian investigation: Comey, Yates and Bharara.

The joke is that no matter how Trump tries to weasel out of truth, truth is a despot based on facts in black and white.

For Trump, it is always about the money. All the investigators had to do was get hold of the FinCEN money laundering documentation by the DOJ in 2013 and they would get the template of the Money Launderer in Chief.

Already the Republicans rats are jumping ship now that an Independent Counsel is taking over the investigations into Trump and Putin and their lovey dovey schmooze. Already one Republican has told the press that Rohrbacker and Trump were paid by Putin.

The problem with cockrot like you is that you want us to respect someone we know is a liar and who has the balls to lie so publicly as if he doesn’t care if anyone knows they are lies are not. We don’t respect any man in the highest office in our country who has 150 lawsuits and more fines than all 44 other presidents.

Denials don’t work forever. Not even with all of the money Putin is funding Trump to reinvent our government ala Russe.

When Comey documented Trump’s conversation, this was what all of us do when we encounter a crud who can’t tell the truth. I’ve done it with at least 2 of the CEOs I worked because I knew they would always change their stories and deny what they’d said or done.

So, I would date, time and document them to protect myself in the event they tried to pull off another of their infamous CEO stunts. When that documentation became a daily part of my job. I resigned rather than take the risk of more of their lies and deceptions.

Sally Yates stated in her interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, she knew she would be fired by Trump for warning him about Flynn. She also said that she considered resigning. But then, since she had 27 years with the DOJ, she realized to resign was to allow Trump to hide Flynn behind a wall of lies and deception.

Sally Yates, like James Clapper, tried to warn Trump and his malignant cancers on our country about Flynn. Trump is still insisting Flynn is a “good” guy. Why? What is it about Flynn that Trump goes out of his way to stop an investigation into potential conflict of interest with the Russians?

It is a well known fact around NY City that Trump can’t borrow any more money from US banks. That’s why he ONLY can launder the money he gets through foreign exchange banks. And, why Deutschebank in NY City is now under investigation.

So, I joked with him that I “am keeping a tape recorder in my desk.” He thought it was a joke and laughed. But, legally, he was given a warning.

As Eleanore and others have pointed out, it’s vitally important to write what the likes of Trump say due to his natural instinct to lie.Trump is such a habitual liar that his instinct is to deny having said something earlier.

Trump is utterly incapable of introspection, unable to concentrate long enough to ponder what is said, unable to make inferences or think inductively.
And these flaws are due to constant bombardment by trash issuing from FOX and right-wing talk radio. Neurological studies zeroing in on the physiology of the brain and its circuitry have already confirmed the atrophy of neural pathways due constant exposure to visual stimuli in the digital age, whether by TV or looking at PED’s. These are results confirmed by actual cellular analysis and not on the basis of psychological interviews Freudian style.

Constant exposure to negative messaging reduces the ability to entertain different viewpoints, and have a wider perspective on any issue. A tunnel-vision effect is induced as a result, which is one of the key reasons for Donald’s election. Of course, Putin had a large part to play as well, and Comey assisted also—Putin is still running the show and Comey’s out looking in.

The reason he can’t get that Lard Ass of his out of bed in the mornings to attend briefings from intel and the military is that he believed he could live as he did in his Golden Penthouse..wake at 10 in the morning to a sumptuous breakfast and then, if he “felt like it” point and delegate. First off, the media is trying to portray this as an issue of “he said,” or “the other he said.” But we have one person (Trump) who has a long record of lying over and over, and plenty of videos and tweets to prove it; and on the other hand, a person (Comey) who had an established reputation of being very honorable and trustworthy, to the extent that (at least prior to the current administration) he had strong and widespread support by congressmen of both political parties. So which one should we believe?
Second, if Comey’s reported statements are true (and it shouldn’t be very hard to obtain solid proof of what was said in the conversations), then we have the situation of Trump asking Comey as director of the FBI to drop a criminal investigation. If a private citizen were to go to the district attorney and ask him (especially if they were close friends) to do such a thing, it would be considered inappropriate, but certainly nothing that would justify criminal prosecution for obstruction of justice. But this situation is different: Trump, as president, had the authority to fire Comey if he did not comply, and in fact did fire him, and even stated on one occasion that it was for that reason. If this had been a matter involving someone whom Trump knew, but not someone closely associated with Trump’s administration or election, and if Trump had not subsequently fired Comey, then the incident should have been overlooked as simply a mistake by an inexperienced person. But if Trump did ask Comey to drop the case, as is alleged, and then fired Comey, especially while at least hinting that it was because he wouldn’t drop the investigation, when it involves a case that implicates a number of people heavily involved in Trump’s administration and in his election campaign, especially considering that it also involves alleged corruption of our election process by a nation considered our enemy, and even more so when there is some evidence hinting that Trump himself may be involved, then it absolutely must be considered obstruction of justice, and an impeachable offense.
