Trump Gets Testy After ‘National Review’ Editor’s Remark

Share

Donald Trump’s war against Fox News and other conservative media outlets has just been kicked up to a whole new level — and it doesn’t look like it’ll get fixed any time soon.

Last night on The Kelly File, whose host Megyn Kelly has been a particular target of Trump’s insults since she grilled him at the first GOP debate, National Review editor Rich Lowry made a rather, well, incisive remark about Trump’s campaign feud with rival Carly Fiorina.

“I think part of what’s going on here is that last debate,” Lowry said. “Let’s be honest, Carly cut his balls off with the precision of a surgeon — and he knows it.”

This got Trump angry. The mogul tweeted out immediately that Lowry should be fined by the government and taken off the air. (Hmm, sounds like socialism to us.)

Note that the FCC’s jurisdiction doesn’t actually extend to cable channels when it comes to indecent programming — and even if it did, the phrase “cut his balls off” probably wouldn’t even warrant a punishment. But never mind: The Donald was on a roll.

Thursday morning, Trump appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, and continued this new fight.

“I get treated very fairly by some of the media — and some of the media does not treat me fairly. Fox does not treat me fairly,” Trump said. “Megyn Kelly! I mean, you had this loser on last night, this guy Lowry. I never even heard of him. He was so out of control — he lost control of himself. It was actually sad, he lost control of himself last night with what he said. And I guess you gotta take a guy like that off the air.”

After Scarborough raised the issue of Trump, a candidate for the Republican nomination, now going to war with not only the biggest conservative TV outlet, but also with the most prominent conservative magazine in the country, The Donald opened up a new front — against National Review itself.

“I don’t think anybody reads it, Joe,” he said. “I think it has no power whatsoever, I’ll be honest, I think it has no power whatsoever. And he’s [Lowry] not a respected guy.”

“I read it,” Scarborough objected.

Trump immediately responded: “You’re the only one.”

This afternoon, National Review writer Charles C. W. Cooke posted a piece on the site titled simply, “Trump the Thin-Skinned Wimp,” with such belittling statements about Trump as: “How quickly was the great hard man reduced to sterile indignation”; “In an instant, the whining began”; “an embarrassing display of frailty”; and, “What matters is that Donald Trump feels hurt, and that he doesn’t like it one bit.”

Meanwhile, The Hill reports that Fox News chief Roger Ailes will be meeting with Trump next week in order to try — yet again — to patch things up.

“Mr. Trump believes he has been treated unfairly in certain instances,” a Fox News spokesperson told the paper in a statement. “FOX News has held every candidate in this race to the highest journalistic standards throughout our coverage. We believe a candid meeting about our differences is required and that any misunderstandings can be handled without compromising those standards.”

I can’t believe it! Donald Trump got testy because a media outlet said he was thin skinned? Hopefully nobody is surprised about this. As for the Black Entrepreneurs event, what made me laugh is when Trump said that he was going to invest heavily in the military to make it great again. Does this bozo actually think that the U.S. Armed Forces are ill prepared to go to war. Could it be that he does not know that our Navy has the same number of carrier groups as the rest of the world combined? That the USAF has more sophisticated jet fighters and bombers than any other country? That our nuclear arsenal is enough to pulverize half of planet Earth in a matter of minutes? Short of preparing for Star Wars Inter-Galactic encounters, I really have no idea what this idiot is talking about.

And if our military is lacking anything, it’s not due to a lack of money. I read an article recently about the Pentagon having misplaced 6 trillion dollars it can’t seem to account for.

The military-industrial complex is a genius at making us believe that we are in imminent danger from some foreign group or country. Do you remember the imaginary Gulf of Tonkin attack on American ships? That imaginary attack was used as a justification for massive bombing and putting half a million troops at one time in Vietnam.

I remember the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the Pueblo incident, and all the other excuses sold to a naive public in the pursuit of geo-political and economic goals. The only excuse I can make for the Pentagon is that they were not alone. In fact, the worst that can be said about them is that they were complicit in a well crafted political and industrial strategy designed to advance our political, economic, and ideological goals at a global level. The domino effect, and other such ruses, were created by politicians, Wall Street and business moguls, religious leaders, and their enablers at the Pentagon. They worked as a team, and their combined work exceeded their own expectations. As for those who made the supreme sacrifice in the pursuit of an illusion of Armageddon, they were just pawns in a high stakes chess game.

Hi Otto: In my opinion, the salient point is that Lowry managed to lower the political discourse even further than the politicians. Lowry should apologize and try to refrain from gutter talk while on the air. How can Lowry believe that such a comment is helpful to understanding any issue facing the electorate?

I think lowry seems rather crude, and I’m not sure he can refrain from gutter talk. And he certainly does nothing to elevate the republican debate.

Politicians on both sides and members of the media are convinced that “we” do not want substantive discussions. Maybe they are correct. In furtherance thereof, let me say that Mr. Lowry was seen masticating in public (while in a popular restaurant).

Which was he doing, Mr. “don’t use vulgarity because it lowers the level of the discourse”: Chewing his food in a restaurant? Or reducing something to a pulp by crushing, grinding, or kneading?

Hi Pattreid: I am not a supporter of Donald Trump. Why do you feel the need to attack me as a person using vulgarities? My point was that Lowry lowered the level of discourse. So, you must approve of that trend; I do not. There is almost nothing that Mr. Trump and I agree on. You have a right to be vulgar; I just do not see how it helps anything.

Orgasms are vulgar? Sad, that you feel that way. Most people think they’re pretty cool. But then there are people who think that sex is dirty, disgusting, vulgar. Or was there something else in my comment that you took as vulgar? Beside, I was using the editorial “you”. Sorry you took it personally.

All that said, it’s fairly difficult to further lower the level of discourse coming from the GOP and the right wing these days.

To Pattreid: Much of the commentary coming from the right wing of the GOP is completely unproductive. I agree with you that it would be difficult (very difficult) to lower the value of such discourse. I think it is our challenge to respond with facts and logic. Maybe, possibly, we can engage some of those people in a discussion of issues. Why do we need to control what happens in Syria? What is the likely cost? What is the benefit and to whom does the benefit accrue? Why should the government control what I put in my body? If there are (as I have read) 2.8 million Muslims in the U.S. and Muslims are our enemy, how come we are more likely to be killed by relatives than by Muslims?

Please don’t use the words “highest journalistic standards” in any sentence or paragraph that contains “Fox News”… you’ll break the English language.

You could drink a six pack and piss to a higher journalistic standard than Fox News.

Poor Donald Trump. Fiorina gives him a headache when he listens because he doesn’t want any substance to creep into the discussion. Not that she’s honest about any of her points, but she goes into detail. Poor Donald only knows “Mexicans bad!” “Nuke Iran!” and “China Evil!”.

Now, he’s whining that he is not being treated fairly and he’s setting himself up for a run as a third party candidate. This Trump is a sick individual. You cannot get a coherent answer from him as to how to solve a problem. He diverts attention from the question with some nonsense repeats himself over and over and never shuts up. He can ridicule anyone, anywhere, but when someone has a negative comment about him, he starts whining like a spoiled child. God help us when this guy looks good to people. We are in real trouble if this idiot gets nominated. It says a lot about the people who follow him.
