Virginia Governor Vetoes Bill Defunding Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe on Tuesday vetoed a bill that would have blocked funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions and other health services.

The bill passed by the Republican-controlled legislature would have barred the state from providing funds to clinics that perform abortions not covered by Medicaid, the federal healthcare program for the poor.

McAuliffe, a Democrat, said the measure would harm thousands of Virginians who relied on Planned Parenthood healthcare services and programs. He vetoed a similar measure last year.

“Attempts to restrict women’s access to health care will impede the goal of making Virginia the best place to live, work, and run a business,” he said in a statement.

Advocates for the law had said it would underpin organizations that provide the widest range of services.

Planned Parenthood draws the ire of many Republicans because it provides abortions. Republican President Donald Trump has pledged to defund the organization.

“Advocates for the law had said it would underpin organizations that provide the widest range of services.”

And which organizations would that be?

The ones they are invested in, of course.

The ones that don’t accept you if you don’t have insurance.

As I’ve stated elsewhere, the Republican base has gone out of its way to legislate how a woman should make decisions regarding the life she is carrying. Not only does the GOP provide a perfect template of the misinterpretation of the Spirit of the Text, but it shows an unwillingness to understand the nature of life in both this world.

They can be forgiven for being confused on how to deal with an issue which was purposely veiled, by making up rulings for which they have no sanction from the Bible regarding the questions and issues around abortion. By extrapolating verses regarding the sanctity of life, they cherry-pick when to show concern for life and when to show disdain for life. In the former case, they rightfully acknowledge that life begins at the moment the sperm and act interact in such a way that “Life” begins”; while in the latter case, when the child becomes an adult, they are far less concerned, citing that since a adult is “strong enough” and they lose their life via an injustice, then c’est la vie, tough luck, or “ain’t that a shame”.

Neither are the anti-abortionists aware of the true nature of the soul once the spark of life enables it to manifest itself in the contingent world, having had its origin in the spiritual realm—this is according to how Baha’u’llah further provides for humanity a deeper insight into the nature of the soul, its origins, and its destination beyond the physical realm, to the degree that our level of comprehension is able to be privy to.
Which is why He didn’t legislate on the matter of abortion explicitly, and left it to the Universal House of Justice to legislate on the matter at a future date. In the meantime, the matter of the decision for abortion is strictly a matter up to the woman, with the proviso that she understands the basic premise that life begins at conception.

The abortion issue is just another reason why old concepts and limited knowledge contained in previous Religions can’t be applied across the board on current issues and complexities that didn’t confront humanity in the past. Laws of the past Religions, in many cases, have to modified, relaxed, and/or abrogated altogether. Failure to apprehend this matter and internalize it will cause the abortion issue to be a source of contention—for the wrong reasons. Which is why Religion was always, and is, meant to be Progressive, and NOT Static — as in “Conservative”.

Just a personal assessment of what I understand concerning the Writings of Baha’u’llah on this topic, and in no way is to be construed as official !!

In the meantime, good call by the Virginia governor.

I got paid $104000 last year by freelancing from my house and I did that by working in my own time for 3+ hrs on daily basis. I was following a business opportunity I came across online and I am so happy that i was able to make so much extra income. It’s very newbie friendly and I’m just so blessed that i discovered it. Here is what i did… http://statictab.com/gpfvgtj

Thank you Governor Terry McAuliffe, you are the man. The Mercers bought and paid for the presidency just to get rid of abortion altogether, like it’s going to get them to heaven, they have packed their suitcases with all their loot and are waiting at the pearly gate to get in.

Good thinking. The governor just saved his state millions of dollars in legal fees fighting the federal courts on an issue that is losing in federal courts all over the country.

    Bravo Zulu, Governor!

He should take this action each and every time the state republicans come up with this nonsense. We can argue the merits of funding or defunding all day, but up and until ‘they’ produce a viable alternative a veto is called for. You can’t just defund or replace without something of equal value. Telling women to close their legs is not enough guys.
