Blame Game: Why Donald Trump’s Clinton Gambit Won’t Work

For reasons best known to Donald Trump and his campaign, they seem to believe that the best way to deflect the ongoing deluge of sexual assault accusations against him is to keep repeating old stories about Bill Clinton. If the former president did something wrong once upon a time, according to this theory, then Hillary Clinton is also guilty by association. And Trump is somehow exculpated.

Both the candidate and his surrogates insist loudly that Hillary Clinton “enabled” her husband’s philandering, although they never quite explain what that means. And sometimes, without offering any proof, they claim that she “intimidated” or “attacked” the women who complained about her husband’s alleged unwanted advances. To bolster this argument, they usually roll out three alleged victims — Juanita Broaddrick, Kathleen Willey, and Paula Jones –usually on Fox News Channel.

And sometimes the Trump camp presents Kathy Shelton, a fourth complainant who, unlike the others, has a story that is actually about Hillary Clinton.

Broaddrick’s straightforward accusation is that Clinton raped her in a hotel room in 1978. But the rest of the circumstances are complicated, with recantations and denials and contradictory testimony. The Office of Independent Counsel, determined though its lawyers were to defame both Clintons, reached no conclusion about the Broaddrick case, except that there was no evidence the Clintons had ever tried to cover it up.

Indeed, when Broaddrick gave her first televised interview about the alleged assault in 1999, she firmly told NBC News correspondent Lisa Myers that neither Clinton nor anyone close to him had tried to intimidate her or prevent her from talking.

Starr also investigated charges by Kathleen Willey that Clinton had forcefully kissed and “groped” her in the Oval Office. But after granting Willey immunity, he found many reasons to doubt her credibility. Linda Tripp, his star witness in the Monica Lewinsky case and a former close friend of Willey, said she was lying. Another Willey friend named Julie Hiatt Steele said Willey had asked her to lie. And Willey had later demanded various appointments from Clinton, including an ambassadorial post, none of which were fulfilled.

Then Starr discovered that Willey had lied to his own agents, which meant that he had to immunize her again. In the end, he wisely set her case aside — which is what journalists should consider doing now.

In 1993, Paula Jones sued Bill Clinton in federal court, claiming that he had exposed himself to her in a Little Rock hotel room and demanded oral sex. There were many reasons to doubt both her story and her motives. Judge Susan Webber Wright, a Republican, dismissed her case in summary judgment, a decision that Jones appealed — which led Clinton to pay a settlement to end the litigation, without any admission of the charges that he had vehemently denied.

Prominent conservatives who had backed Jones financially and politically from the start, including Ann Coulter, angrily dumped her after she posed for Penthouse magazine in December 2000. Now that she has reappeared with Trump, they’re welcoming her back. But whatever she says now about Hillary Clinton is likely a script given to her by the Trump campaign.

Of the women brought forward by the Trump campaign, only Kathy Shelton’s complaint directly and credibly involves Hillary Clinton. Ms. Shelton, now 53, was raped in 1975 at age 12 by a factory worker – and the trial court appointed Clinton, then a young attorney in Arkansas, to represent him. She did so diligently and, thanks to her work as well as serious prosecutorial failures, the rapist got off with a plea bargain. Trump’s charge that Clinton “laughed” in a taped interview about that painful outcome has been debunked by fact-checking organizations.

In fact, Shelton told a Newsday reporter in 2008 that she didn’t bear Hillary Clinton any ill will — although she has clearly changed her mind since then. Her personal story is terrible; she has lived with awful memories of that crime and suffered psychological damage, later became addicted to methamphetamine, and went to prison several years ago for theft.

But it is hard to see how Clinton, forced to accept her rapist’s case by a trial judge, and duty bound to provide the best possible defense, deserves the blame for what happened to Shelton. Nor can that sad case, decided 41 years ago, erase a life’s dedication to the advancement of women and children.

No, nothing the Clintons are said to have done excuses the gross misconduct of Donald Trump — a man who never apologizes and always looks for someone else to blame. This time, he doesn’t seem to be getting away with it.

The most important parts of this issue are (1) Bill Clinton is not running for office, (2) the claims made against him have been litigated, and he was impeached for denying a sexual affair under oath, (3) most Americans consider him one of the most successful U.S. Presidents in modern history, (4) claiming that Hillary was an enabler because she initially believed her husband, and referred to his accusers as liars, is one of the most ridiculous conclusions ever reached by her detractors, and (5) there is a difference between a married man having extra marital affairs, which cannot be excused, and a man forcefully engaging in predatory sexual attacks against women…and bragging about it.
Most importantly, the fact that the Trump campaign, and the GOP nominee, are spending so much time on this issue highlights how desperate they are, how unqualified Trump is, and how bad their political platform and vision are when it comes to advancing their Republican agenda on foreign and domestic policy. Their economic and foreign policy records, their attacks against social programs, their refusal to pay for things we need as a nation while supporting more spending on more sophisticated weapons to fight people firing AK47s from the beds of pickup trucks, their refusal to accept the effects on global warming, their refusal to fund education and retraining, their rejection of same sex marriage, their opposition to raising the minimum wage, and so many other political positions important to the average person, coupled with Trump’s self-destruct behavior, are the reason Hillary Clinton is going to win easily on November 8th. The only question mark is how large her coattails are going to be.

You might want to consider that the Clinton’s have been lying to the American people for decades. They are part of the corrupt ruling class that IS the main problem in this country. Rolling out all these women is nothing new for the Clinton’s. They do this stuff to any political opponent they have faced over the decades. IF YOU WANT TO SEE AMERICA AS A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, VOTE FOR CORRUPT HILLARY. Pay a little attention to the wiki leaks email releases.

Trump is the ones rolling out these women.
As for those emails, there is nothing in these e-mails that have been deleted by Clinton to show something she did was wrong.
As a matter of fact, those deleted emails are nothing she generated, but letters to her about the feeling of persons in her camp who expressed unflattering opinions about others in her camp.
        In other words, gossip.
And yes, to the person earmarked in those e-mails, unflatting remarks about another could have been concluded to be ‘sensitive’ and ‘secretive’ or ‘classified.
        Most gossip is.
This is the reason the Attorney General didn’t press charges.
No procecutor in their right mind will prosecute someone for deleting gossip.
I suspect that you haven’t read not one of those emails.
There were about three of four email that did have something relating to U S business, but those things were common knowledge anyways as they are probably those things that were later reclassifed after the fact.

The AG did not press charges because she is on the Clinton payroll, along with the FBI director, and most of the media. This is the height of corruption, and you stupid liberals want to continue it. IF Hillary is elected, it will be because of a rigged system, and every real patriot should reject the election and take our country back from the communist liberals by force.

The entire concept of prisons was developed with people like Hillary Clinton in mind and the need for a place to put people like her….the fact that she isn’t currently serving time will go down in history as one of the darkest chapters in this country’s history. She walks the streets today arrogantly flaunting the law due to embedded governmental hacks who are corrupt to the core and protecting her.

Actually the FBI director is a Republican.
No, they did not press charges because there were nothing that warrant the charges they sought to press.
You don’t press charges for deleting gossip.
The only thing they could go after Clinton for was for using a private server.
But obviously, many Congressperson in Washington have private server themselves. Possibly, even the FBI director and the Atty General.
I don;t know where you are getting your info from, but sometimes it pays to do critical independant analysis and thinking.
One have to come to the conclusion of why they didn’t press charges, and look beyond what you just want to hear.
By the way, in just having a two party system in this country, the process is already rigged.
We have been giving the option of taking this poison or the other.
My poison of choice is Hillary Clinton.

She wasn’t charged with anything because the FBI did not find she had done anything illegal. Just being someone dippy Republicans voters hate isn’t a crime — yet. The FBI Director, a Republican, I am sure would have loved to have found something to charge her with — it would have made him a hero with his party and conservative voters like you. And probably led to a big payoff from some conservative billionaire donor when he left government work. Fortunately, we aren’t yet a 3rd world country where the national police willingly trump up false charges to please their political and financial patrons. In America still, even a Republican FBI head has some integrity.

A situation that is unlikely to continue if Trump lands in office.

If the AG had charged Hillary with anything, he would have had to go back and charge 22 members of the Bush Administration with far worse. 22 people including Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rice, Powell and numerous others ALL WHO USED THE RNC’S PRIVATE SERVERS FOR OVER 85% OF ALL THE WORK THEY DID WHILE IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!

And it isn’t a few thousands emails that Hillary deleted that’s the problem – it’s the more than a couple million that Powell and Rice deleted deliberately, along with the more than 80 million emails that are still missing from the Bush years!!! At one point it was 103 million missing but they found 22 million of them leaving around 80 million still somewhere!! I wonder why 80 million emails are missing from the most corrupt administration in American history!!!!!!

So if the AG set some kind of precedent, there would have been calls to apply that precedent to people that were far more guilty than Hillary in the previous administration!!!!!!

“IF YOU WANT TO SEE AMERICA AS A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, VOTE FOR CORRUPT HILLARY.”

        How dumb can you get!!

If you want to see states that are the equivalent of 3rd world countries all you have to do is go to virtually any red state dummkopf!!

For 2014 and 2015, Gallup/Healthways and 24/7 Wall Street designated 10 GOP-governed states as being THE MOST MISERABLE STATES TO LIVE IN with the worst quality of life.

And interestingly Mike Pence’s state Indiana, just happened to be ranked the 3rd most miserable in both 2014 and 2015 with John Kasich’s state Ohio being #4 in 2014 and #2 in 2015. And for 2015, Jindal’s state of Louisiana ended up as #4.

Talk about being a total dummkopf by making that absurd statement.
        See this lowlife:

INDIANAPOLIS – For all of the positive national press Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio seem to receive on a regular basis, a recent breakdown of the Gallup-Healthways 2014 Well-Being Index makes the region look less appealing.

Analyzed by Yahoo’s 24/7 Wall St. blog , Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio landed among the nation’s 10 most miserable states, according to key measures of the index.

Areas such as poverty, unemployment, obesity, mental health, smoking habits, vaccination and insufficient sleep were highlighted in Yahoo’s ranking.

Indiana fared worse than Ohio, ranking number 3 on the list with a 31.8 percent obesity rate, among other measures.

Ohio ranked fourth on the list that also included Tennessee, Missouri, Michigan, Alabama, Arkansas and West Virginia.

For Ohio that meant a 16 percent poverty rate, 7.4 percent unemployment rate, 30.4 percent obesity rate, and 23.4 percent of adults with a smoking habit.

Neither state could beat Kentucky with its 18.8 percent poverty rate, 8.3 percent unemployment, and 33.2 percent obesity rate.

As a matter of fact, the only state to do so was West Virginia, a state that sat at the top of Yahoo’s worst list for six years, with a 35.1 percent obesity rate.

Hitler and his henchmen victimized an entire continent and exterminated millions in his quest for a co-called “Master Race.”

But the concept of a white, blond-haired, blue-eyed master Nordic race didn’t originate with Hitler. The idea was created in the United States, and cultivated in California, decades before Hitler came to power. California eugenicists played an important, although little known, role in the American eugenics movement’s campaign for ethnic cleansing.

And not only has Gallup and 24/7 Wall Street ranked those 10 GOP-governed states as the most miserable to live in, WalletHub listed 10 GOP-governed states as the states with the highest percentage of the states residents being broke and on the verge of bankruptcy.

And on top of that CNN/Money rated states across the nation with respect to how much the people in each state could afford to spend on consumer consumption per capita, and guess what? The 25 states with the least consumer consumption per capita were All GOP-governed states. And what makes that even worse is that the red state of Texas which has the 2nd highest GDP in the nation ranks 34th in the nation in consumer spending. Proving without question that GOP governance forces people to barely live above the poverty level so they have next to nothing to spend each month on goodies for themselves once they drain their income on just necessities to stay alive.

And when are you going to wake up and realize that it’s 14 Blue states that get the least federal aid back per dollar of taxes they send to Washington such that it’s essentially those 14 blue states that are actually keeping America running??

Even Lawrence Wilkerson in a speech this spring down in Texas, made the comment that, if it wasn’t for all the monies that California and New York send to Washington in taxes for red states to suck back in federal aid, America’s southeastern states which are virtually all GOP-governed would look like Bangladesh today!!!

        Wake up you complete jerk!!!

But at least I read and deduce for myself what’s god and true, while seemingly you draw your conclusions from what, FAUX NEWS and what Trump says.
Hopefully you don’t have daughters or sons.
If your sons tried what Trump is doing and BRAGGING ABOUT IT, they’d be jailed.
If your daughter were the victims of such from a Trump character, you’d want the book thrown at him. What about a granddaughter, folks have been killed for such.
I’d bet you thought that Duggar kid was doing something innocent also.

They had the nerve of accusing Clinton of doing the same things they were doing.

            Not quite correct.

Clinton was accused, the others were not. The point then becomes that there we never sufficient, creditable, evidence to charge Bill, much less bring him to trial.

            Two points.

You see the ramifications when one loses the difference between allegation and conviction?

But Clinton was accused intentionally due to political motivation which had been created by the GOP because of it’s hatred for the Clintons. The others didn’t govern during a time when a political party would be so outright depraved as the GOP has become since Reagan started the destruction of the American way of life; and our country’s political discourse by brainwashing Americans to believing that our government created every problem that ever faced their lives..

But the Republicans will tell us that Trump “was accused intentionally…Democrats…hatred for Trump”.

The only difference is that Trump has boasted of his ability to do so.

It strikes me that consistency forces us to adopt the same attitude to the charges against Bill, Trump, or Bill Cosby, for that matter.

Three ways to affect change in our government, as set forth by our founders. The soapbox box, the ballot box, or the ammo box. Many have tried the soapbox. With a media as corrupt as the government, that has not worked. The ballot box has not worked either. We now know that elections are rigged to keep the ruling elite in power. That leaves the ammo box. I would hate to see that as an option, but it seems all that is left. Our founders foresaw the possibility of our government becoming as corrupt and as tyrannical as that of England, and were wise enough to have included our second amendment to assure our country would remain free. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

The soapbox, the ballot box or the ammo box, are all ways of changing our government. Our Founders were wise enough to include our second amendment to prevent our government from becoming exactly what it has become, corrupt and tyrannical. Many have tried the soapbox, but with a corrupt media that hasn’t worked. The ballot box has not worked, especially now that we know that our elections have been rigged by the ruling elite. We are approaching the point where we have only the latter option to take our country back. I hope it does not come to that.

If your only problem is that you want to discuss your complaints about Bill Clinton, why don’t you go somewhere where that’s the matter under discussion. Here we’re talking about Hillary, who is going to be your next President. She’s never been accused of sexual impropriety (indeed your fellow-travelers complain that she’s sexless). Actually, I’m not sure she’s got grounds to complain about anybody. The guy was convicted and, I assume, went to prison. What did Ms. Shelton want, the death penalty? Life in prison? Those aren’t her choices. And if she’s been disappointed (unclear, given her 2008 statement), it’s not clear why.
